Heavy Shelling Reported Across South Lebanon as Olive Season Nears End

No framing issues found.

As is true most days, multiple areas of southern Lebanon have reported being under sustained heavy artillery fire from Israeli forces. Multiple towns and villages seem to be primary targets, including in the Tyre and Nabatieh Districts. This is a problem in any season, but particularly now, because these few weeks in October are the primary olive harvesting season for southern Lebanon, and are economically vital for the agriculture-heavy area.

This year, it’s a constant challenge . In the course of an invasion and ongoing occupation of much of southern Lebanon, Israel has burned a lot of olive trees to the ground, but where the trees still stand, getting permission as a local to access your own trees is no small task. Olive trees in Marjayoun District were destroyed in white phosphorous strikes | Image from X Even when allowed, those harvesting olives can find themselves in harm’s way, because shells are continuing to fly in all the time, and drones are looming overhead, and the ground troops that granted permission, or at least didn’t stop access aren’t necessarily the same ones deciding whether to attack the harvesters.

With olive season coming to a close, the focus is increasingly back on the municipalities. Drones reportedly attacked a house outside of Mayfadoun, in Nabatieh District , and massive explosions were reported in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah . The only confirmed casualty today was in Deir Kila, where a person collecting scrap metal was injured when a stray device, likely an unexploded munition, exploded nearby. His condition is as yet unconfirmed.

About this analysis

Antiwar.com reports Israeli artillery fire, drone attacks and explosions across southern Lebanon during the olive harvest, and one man injured by a stray device in Deir Kila. It names Israeli forces as the actor, calls the Israeli presence an invasion and occupation, and says Israel burned olive trees, including with white phosphorus. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “under sustained heavy artillery fire from Israeli forces”

The article names Israeli forces as the party firing. It does not hide the shelling behind a sentence with no actor.

  • “In the course of an invasion and ongoing occupation of much of southern Lebanon, Israel has burned a lot of olive trees to the ground”

The article calls the Israeli presence an invasion and an occupation. It names Israel as the party destroying the groves, which matches Al Jazeera's report of the ongoing Israeli occupation and land torched since Israel began bombing.

  • “Olive trees in Marjayoun District were destroyed in white phosphorous strikes”

The article names the weapon used on farmland. Lebanon's Environment Minister, quoted by Al Jazeera, also says white phosphorus was used.
