Six of one family burnt alive in Gaza. The BBC wrote it so that nobody did it.

On 21 July the BBC reported that Firas al-Masri, his wife Salsabeel and their four children, Faryal, Salma, Amira and Naim, were burnt to death in their home in Gaza City. Read the sentence that reports it and there is nobody in it who burnt them. Two paragraphs later the BBC attributes 1,168 Palestinian deaths to 'Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry', then writes that 'Four Israeli soldiers have been killed' in its own voice, with no source at all. Both figures come from a party to the conflict. Only the Palestinian one is treated as a claim. There are four separate breaches in that passage and you will file one of them.

On 21 July 2026 the BBC reported twelve people killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza, six of them from one family. Firas al-Masri, his wife Salsabeel and their four children, Faryal, Salma, Amira and Naim, were burnt to death in their home in Gaza City. This is the twenty-second month of Israel's genocide in Gaza, and the ninth month of a 'ceasefire' under which the BBC's own article counts 1,168 Palestinians killed.

Nobody burnt them. Here is how the BBC reports the family's deaths: 'The brother of Firas al-Masri told the BBC that he had been burnt to death along with his wife, Salsabeel, and their three daughters and son, Faryal, Salma, Amira and Naim.' Six people are burnt alive and the sentence contains no one who did it. Compare the sentence the BBC writes about Israeli deaths in the same passage: 'Four Israeli soldiers have been killed in Palestinian attacks in Gaza'. There, the killer is named in the same breath as the killing.

The first time Israel appears, it is to excuse the strike. 'The Israeli military said its target was a Hamas operative and that it was still looking into the results of the attack.' The army that killed the family gets to say why before anyone has established what it hit, and the BBC prints the justification without noting that no evidence was offered for it.
