About this campaign

On Thursday 28 May 2026, BBC One broadcast a Question Time 'AI special', hosted by Fiona Bruce, on the future of artificial intelligence in the United Kingdom.

Why AI policy is a controversial subject. The government's Data (Use and Access) Bill triggered a public revolt by more than 400 artists, including Paul McCartney and Elton John, over the unpaid use of copyrighted creative work to train AI models, forcing a partial government reversal. Job losses, the regulation of AI deepfakes, and the impact on education are all openly disputed.

Who was on the panel. All five participants were advocates for, or had a direct stake in, the rollout of AI: Darren Jones (Labour minister championing AI across government); Julia Lopez (Conservative shadow for science, innovation and technology); Mo Gawdat (former Google executive and AI author); Laura Gilbert (Tony Blair Institute, funded by the technology billionaire Larry Ellison and a prominent lobbyist for AI in government); and Victor Riparbelli (chief executive of Synthesia, which sells the AI avatar and synthetic-video technology scrutinised for its use in disinformation).
