The suspect left the location in a silver vehicle which was traced and led to his quick arrest, and he was held in custody for questioning as police enquiries continued.

Mohamad Douba, president of York Mosque and Islamic Centre, said the mosque was forced to close as a precaution while police carried out their enquiries and investigations.

Police reassurance and mosque response

North Yorkshire Police said, "It is too early to say what may have been the motivation behind this disturbing incident, but our Muslim community in York can be reassured that we are doing everything we can to establish the full circumstances."

The force also said it would provide "high-visibility patrols" around the mosque while people attended for prayer and that officers would meet with the imam.

Douba said a member of the mosque noticed suspicious activity and "heard what appeared to be a shooting," prompting them to contact police who attended promptly.

In his statement, Douba added, "We are grateful that no-one was injured, and there have been no reports of any members of our congregation, staff, volunteers or students being harmed."

The York Interfaith Group Chair Tina Funnell thanked police for locating and arresting the suspect and called on people across the city to "condemn any violence aimed at a religion" and to offer support to the Mosque and its members.

Funnell said, "On behalf of York Interfaith Group I wish to express our support to all members of the Mosque who once more are threatened," while noting the mosque provides services including social work, free lunches and youth work.

North Yorkshire Police asked witnesses to contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number 12260145924 when providing details.
