Quake off Flores, 7.7
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Flores region, with the US Geological Survey reporting a depth of 10 kilometers and an epicentre 68 km (42 miles) north-northwest of the city of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province.
“depth of 10km at 5:58am on Saturday Indonesia time”
The quake hit at 5:58am on Saturday Indonesia time, and the USGS placed the epicentre near Flores island while Indonesia’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency issued a tsunami warning.

EFE said the USGS located the epicentre about 62 kilometers northwest of Ende and 162 kilometers east-northeast of Labuan Bajo, and it reported that “hasta el momento no se han reportado víctimas ni daños materiales.”
Indonesia’s location on the “Ring of Fire” was cited in the Guardian coverage as a reason it is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity, with the archipelago described as more than 17,000 islands.
Tsunami warning and monitoring
The Guardian reported that Indonesia’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency issued a tsunami warning and urged residents to stay away from beaches and riverbanks.
NBC News similarly said the agency issued a tsunami warning and urged residents to stay away from beaches and riverbanks, while advising residents along affected coastlines to move to higher ground.

NBC News added that Australia’s tsunami warning center said the undersea earthquake will have “no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories”.
The Guardian also said officials were closely monitoring coastal tide gauges for any changes as residents were advised to move to higher ground.
Aftershocks, no damage yet
News18 said the US Geological Survey reported the quake followed by aftershocks, and it described BMKG warning of possible tsunami waves.
“réplicas importantes, entre ellas movimientos de magnitud 5,6 y 5,9”
Portal Extra reported that the initial monitoring showed different magnitudes and that “El Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos (USGS) confirmó posteriormente una magnitud de 7,7”.
Portal Extra also said the first hours included “réplicas importantes, entre ellas movimientos de magnitud 5,6 y 5,9 en la misma zona,” while noting that “Hasta el momento de esta actualización, los reportes internacionales no habían confirmado un balance definitivo de víctimas o daños materiales.”
ABC News, citing the Associated Press, said the quake hit Flores region with a depth of 10 kilometers at 5:58 a.m. Saturday Indonesia time and reported that it was the USGS that said the quake struck off the coast of Indonesia.
