Airbnb builds in-house AI
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is planning to start a new artificial intelligence lab and is considering a focus on user interaction and design, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The plan is described as Chesky’s first foray into the global AI race, with one person saying he is in the early stages of funding the lab and that details could change.
Chesky will remain CEO of Airbnb, and several people said he will not serve as chief executive of the new lab, while representatives for Chesky and Airbnb declined to comment.
The reporting also says Chesky has often said AI applications for travel and e-commerce require a rich user interface rather than the kind of text-based chatbots popularized by OpenAI and Anthropic PBC, and that Airbnb has not partnered with OpenAI to create a plug-in within ChatGPT because Chesky said the tools aren’t robust enough.
Mistral’s shift and Microsoft
Mistral AI made a volte-face by abandoning (in part) the open source approach it had promoted five months earlier, with its latest large language model becoming proprietary and requiring paid offers or Azure to use.
The change is paired with a commercial partnership between Mistral AI and Microsoft, with Microsoft described as already linked to OpenAI and with the investment amount not indicated in the report.
The Substack account says Mistral AI was launched in April by three former researchers from DeepMind and FAIR, and that the startup has raised nearly 500 millions d’euros and reached a valuation of two milliards de dollars.
It also quotes Arthur Mensch telling Le Monde that “Le Chat est une démonstration,” while the same piece says Mistral’s model comparisons place Mistral Large behind GPT 4 and alongside Google’s Gemini launched début février.
AI coding reshapes work
In a conference call intended to present the first-quarter financial balance, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky acknowledged that the volume of programming currently handled by AI at Airbnb reaches 60% and that he expects that figure to rise.

La Razón frames the shift as part of a broader trend where AI labs accelerate programming-related capabilities, and it says the downside is that democratization of programming can lead to job losses, citing Coinbase’s acknowledgment earlier in the week.
The same article says Chesky stressed that teams are releasing more features and iterating faster, and it adds that he pointed to the need for leadership and team oversight roles to assume a more proactive programming role.
It also reports that Chesky said he was already seeing many of Airbnb’s design managers and engineering managers returning to programming or using Claude Code, while he declined to say what implications this will have for how teams are structured in the future.
