Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani attended the anniversary ceremony in Doha. Al Jazeera launched in 1996 and marks 30 years of news coverage.

30 years in Doha

Al Jazeera marked its 30th anniversary with a commemorative event at its headquarters in Doha, Qatar, attended by the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and other delegates. Al Jazeera’s Director General Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal Al Thani said, "It was a promise that journalism can be free and responsible," as the network looked back on its launch on November 1, 1996. Al Jazeera’s Director of News Raed Fakih said, "For three decades, Al Jazeera “has helped transform the way news is covered in the Arab world”," and he hailed the network for making room for "voices, issues and perspectives that had not been given the space they deserved".

Al Jazeera Media Network described the anniversary as coinciding with a restructuring of its Arabic-language news services, separating rolling breaking news coverage, live event broadcasting, and more in-depth reporting across three channels. Al Jazeera’s anniversary coverage also pointed to the network’s costs and risks, including a US strike that killed correspondent Tareq Ayyoub in 2003 and an Israeli strike that killed Anas al-Sharif and four colleagues as it hit a press tent outside al-Shifa Hospital in August 2025.

New channels and AI

Al Jazeera launched a new ecosystem of news channels for Arabic-speaking audiences under the slogan “Now. Meaning. Humanity.” on Sunday, 1 November 2026, with three channels built around speed, depth, and the human dimension.

Asef Hamidi, Managing Director of Al Jazeera Arabic Channel, said, "The new ecosystem is built around an integrated system for responding to breaking news and major developments," and he described Al Jazeera Mubasher as providing live coverage "without an intermediary."

Raed Fakih said, "Today, as we mark Al Jazeera’s 30th anniversary, we are building on that editorial legacy," and he added that the network was broadening the scope of coverage and giving greater prominence to a wider range of events and viewpoints.

Al Jazeera also launched The Core, an artificial intelligence initiative first announced in December 2025 in collaboration with Google Cloud, and the project aimed to integrate AI into the newsroom.

Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal Al Thani said the first phase of The Core is scheduled to launch on November 1, coinciding with the network’s anniversary, and he emphasized that AI would support rather than replace journalists, with editorial judgement and human oversight remaining central.

Independence, reach, and pressure

Al Jazeera’s anniversary events included speeches by Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer al-Thani and Director General Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal al-Thani, as the Emir of Qatar attended the celebration at the network’s headquarters in Doha under the slogan "And the Story Continues". Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer al-Thani said Al Jazeera has become the Arab citizen’s primary source of news and a trusted source for conveying news to viewers from all over the world. The Gulf Times said the network reached more than 430mn homes in over 150 countries, and it described the channel as having 3,000-plus staff drawn from more than 95 nationalities working across over 70 bureaus.

The anniversary coverage also revisited pressure on the network, including Israel banning it in 2024 and later raiding its Ramallah bureau, and it noted that at least 24 journalists have been martyred in the line of duty. Al Jazeera’s Director General Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal Al Thani said at the event, "To the martyrs of Al Jazeera, to our colleagues who departed while carrying out their duties, we say to them today, you are part and parcel of Al Jazeera’s promise," as the network entered its fourth decade.
