Demolitions and airstrikes

Israeli occupation forces carried out demolition operations in Mais Al-Jabal and Majdal Zoun, according to an Al-Manar reporter in southern Lebanon. Israeli occupation forces also carried out extensive demolition operations in Al-Mansouri, according to an Al-Manar reporter in southern Lebanon. Al-Manar correspondents in southern Lebanon said Israeli artillery shelling targeted Bar’ashit, Mais Al-Jabal, Beit Lif, Khiam, Al-Mansouri, Kfar Tibnit, Nabatieh Al-Fawqa, Haris and Wadi Al-Slouqi.

Al-Manar correspondents added that Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes on Bani Hayyan, the outskirts of Maifadoun, and Al-Mansouri, and that an airstrike was reported in Zawtar Al-Sharqiya targeting the town’s Scout Complex. Al-Manar said the attacks formed part of an ongoing pattern of Israeli aggression across southern Lebanon, where Israeli occupation forces continued to carry out airstrikes, artillery shelling, demolitions, and other operations on daily basis despite the cessation-of-hostilities agreement.

Security belt shift

Sohaib Amahz wrote in al-Sharq al-Awsat that the Israeli operation in the town of Mansuri in the Sidon District raised a question about whether raid and demolition operations would reduce direct ground presence while keeping wider areas under surveillance and control by fire.

The Israeli army announced that forces from the combat team of the Golani Brigade, under the leadership of Division 36, in the security area in southern Lebanon to remove threats to the State of Israel were going out for a period of rest.

The Israeli army stated that the forces of Brigade 55, led by Division 91, in cooperation with the “Yahalom” unit, destroyed more than 600 sites classified as infrastructure for Hezbollah, eight underground routes, and discovered dozens of launch platforms.

Retired Brig. Gen. Dr. Bahaa Halal told al-Sharq al-Awsat that what is happening in Mansuri “contains indicators that go beyond a temporary military operation,” and may reflect a shift from direct land control to control by fire.

Brig. Gen. Khaled Hamada (ret.) told al-Sharq al-Awsat that what is happening in Mansuri could not be considered a final model or the end of a phase, and that Israel was benefiting from a period of stagnation to “dredge destruction infrastructure and destruction of what can be destroyed of the villages”.

Casualties and political backdrop

Lebanese authorities said the offensive since March 2 resulted in at least 4,386 deaths, 12,413 injuries, and the displacement of more than one million people. The Lebanese Army said a soldier was seriously wounded and three civilians were injured in an Israeli attack on a military vehicle in the Nabatieh al-Fauqa area, where an Israeli drone had earlier carried out a raid. The National News Agency of Lebanon reported that Israeli aircraft struck the outskirts of the town of Zotar al-Sharqiya toward Meifdon, while Ali al-Taher peak at the outskirts of Nabatieh al-Fawqa came under intermittent shelling.

The Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam returned to Beirut and briefed President Jozef Aoun and Speaker Nabih Berri on the results of his meetings in New York on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly and his subsequent visit to Washington, according to the newspaper Gulf. The newspaper Gulf said Lebanon relies on the American administration to pressure Israel to compel it to implement the 'frame formula', and it added that the eighth round of direct Lebanese-Israeli negotiations is tentatively scheduled for the second half of the current month.
