Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon

Israeli airstrikes hit Froun, Kfar Tibnit and Al-Hujeir Valley in southern Lebanon. Al-Manar TV Lebanon later reported an Israeli airstrike on Al-Slouqi Valley, and it also reported an Israeli airstrike in the outskirts of Shaqra. Two men were killed in southern Lebanon’s Bint Jbeil district during the annual olive harvest, with one death in Froun and the other in Yater.

Lebanese state media and local authorities said the man in Froun died after a "foreign object" left over from previous Israeli operations exploded while he and others tended their trees. Lebanese state media and local authorities said the man in Yater was killed when Israeli shelling "targeted the outskirts of the town while he was inspecting his land and olive harvest".

Army Blames Tank Fire

The Lebanese army blamed Israeli tank fire and called the ongoing attacks "a flagrant breach of existing agreements." The Yater municipality urged residents "to avoid the outskirts of the town and refrain from crossing the earthen barrier" separating unsafe neighbourhoods for fear of Israeli attacks. In Froun, the NNA reported that "a foreign object" left over from previous Israeli operations exploded and killed the man as he and others tended their trees.

Froun mayor Hassan Bazzi told AFP that the engineer had come down from Beirut, where he lives, for the harvest. The incident prompted local residents to call off the harvest and wait for "the Lebanese army to complete the decontamination of the village," Bazzi said.

Displacement and Harvest Disruption

Since an agreement between Lebanon and Israel was struck in June, violence in the south has lessened but not stopped. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recorded nearly 350,000 internally displaced people in late August. Volunteers from the nearby town of Jebchit and locals came to help their southern neighbours with the harvest in an act of solidarity.

Israeli troops still occupy a band of territory 10 kilometers wide running along the border. The framework deal between Israel and Lebanon involves Hezbollah’s disarmament, a gradual Israeli withdrawal and the deployment of the Lebanese army to the region.
