Tropea nursery death
A 18-month-old child, Alessio Pio, resident in Zungri in the Vibonese area, died at Catanzaro hospital after being transferred from Vibo Valentia following a rapid worsening of his condition.
“An anaerobic, Gram-positive bacterium physiologically present in the vaginal and intestinal bacterial flora”
ANSA said Alessio Pio was admitted to the pronto soccorso of Vibo Valentia at 2:51 on 17 July with symptoms of gastroenterite, vomito e diarrea, and that at 8:10 on 21 July, after a severe deterioration with suspected grave setticemia, he was urgently transported to Catanzaro where he died.

The same ANSA report said that, in the days before the death, about a dozen children at the Family baby school in Tropea developed gastrointestinal disorders, with four hospitalized and three already discharged while one remained in Catanzaro with symptoms that appeared in net improvement.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Vibo Valentia opened an inquiry after a complaint by the family, and the Squadra mobile ordered the sequestro of the child’s cartella clinica to reconstruct the entire medical process.
In parallel, the nursery was seized and temporarily closed as authorities carried out checks, with the autopsy ordered to establish the exact causes of death and any responsibilities.
Clostridium difficile hypothesis
Health sources and nursery leadership pointed to a bacterial hypothesis, with Serena Miceli, dirigente della Family baby school, saying the most accredited hypothesis was a batterio entrato dall'esterno all'interno dell'asilo and that suspicions focused on Clostridium difficile.
ANSA quoted Miceli describing Clostridium difficile as "un batterio che si prende generalmente all'interno delle strutture ospedaliere" and said she had sent a Pec to the Asp and ordered a precautionary closure until Sunday for extraordinary sanificazione.

LaPresse, citing epidemiologist Massimo Ciccozzi, described Clostridium difficile as a bacterium that causes intestinal infections and said symptoms include watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and fever.
LaPresse also quoted virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco warning that "it is essential to avoid hasty conclusions" while autopsy, microbiological tests, and epidemiological investigation would provide answers.
The Corriere della Sera article said that, at the moment, no microrganismo responsabile has been identified and that it is not possible to attribute the outbreak to a specific bacterium, including the hypothesis of contamination through the fasciatoi, which remains one of the pistes al vaglio.
What investigations will decide
The investigations are centered on whether there is a causal link between the nursery cases and Alessio Pio’s death, with Calabria 7 reporting that at present there is no definitive confirmation and no direct link established between the various cases.
“Three youngsters were discharged, while one remains hospitalized in Catanzaro”
Calabria 7 said the Prosecutor’s Office seized the medical records and the body and that the medico-legal examination will determine the exact cause of death, verify the nature of the infection, and reconstruct the timeline of illness and care received.
The same report said the autopsy will be carried out by forensic medicine specialists from Magna Graecia University in Catanzaro, and that only after these investigations it will be possible to assess whether any accountability exists.
Corriere della Sera added that the Procura has opened an inchiesta and that autopsia, esami microbiologici and indagini epidemiologiche will establish what really happened, while it also noted that the outbreak’s responsible organism has not yet been identified.
In the meantime, the nursery’s management and health authorities acted to interrupt potential spread, with ANSA describing that Miceli had ordered the closure precauzionale and autotutelare of the structure until Sunday for extraordinary sanificazione.
