Algorand’s quantum roadmap

Algorand unveiled a roadmap to make its blockchain broadly quantum-resistant by the end of 2027, with phased upgrades beginning in 2026. The plan calls for introducing post-quantum accounts, multisignature wallets and staking support starting in 2026, before expanding protections to core protocol components.

The Algorand Foundation said migrating live blockchain infrastructure to post-quantum cryptography will take years and must begin well before "Q-Day." CoinDesk reported that the roadmap reflects crypto networks including Ethereum and Solana ramping up preparations for a future quantum-computing threat.

Timeline and wallet changes

Bloomingbit said Algorand plans to introduce post-quantum accounts, multisignature wallets and staking support while shifting core protocol components to a quantum-resistant architecture.

Bloomingbit also said the roadmap targets three years ahead of the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA)'s quantum-resistant transition timeline for national security systems.

CryptoRank reported that the transition begins in 2025 with post-quantum accounts, multi-signature wallets and staking support, targeting a full core upgrade by the end of 2026.

CryptoRank added that the protocol updates align with NIST post-quantum standards and are expected to require minimal action from most ALGO holders, while developers may need to update applications to support new account types and transaction formats.

Why it matters for users

The Cryptonomist said Algorand’s roadmap commits to achieving broad quantum resilience across its entire protocol by the end of 2027, and it frames the effort as extending work begun in 2022. The Cryptonomist quoted Bruno Martins, Chief Technology Officer at the Algorand Foundation, saying "Post-quantum security cannot be retrofitted after Q-Day."

In the same coverage, the Cryptonomist quoted Chris Peikert, Chief Scientific Officer at the Algorand Foundation, saying "Migrating a live protocol takes years, and the probability of a quantum attack on legacy cryptography grows meaningfully as the end of this decade approaches." The Cryptonomist also said the roadmap covers every protocol layer, including user wallets, developer tools, consensus mechanisms, and treasury accounts, and it described native post-quantum accounts arriving in Q3 2026 via the Pera wallet and updated SDKs.
