The BBC said the Home Office was "bearing down" on small boat crossings and added that a landmark deal had been signed with France to boost "enforcement action on beaches and put people smugglers behind bars".

The BBC reported that the UK and France confirmed a new £662m deal in April to stop migrants from crossing the Channel, involving France deploying millions of pounds worth of drones, two helicopters and a camera system.
The BBC also said the Home Office had stopped more than 42,000 migrants trying to cross the Channel since the 2024 election and that it had removed or deported almost 60,000 people who were here illegally.
The BBC placed the weekend surge in a broader pattern, noting that crossings are more common during warmer weather periods and that 8,565 people had crossed the Channel so far in 2026, which it said was 37% lower than at the same point last year.
France rescue and heat
On the French side, authorities provided assistance to migrants facing difficulties, with the Maritime Prefecture of the English Channel and North Sea saying several boats carrying migrants were taken to the CROSS in Gris-Nez, Pas-de-Calais.
InfoMigrants reported that at least six French vessels monitored these small boats and that, given the structural fragility of crowded boats, a decision was made not to force migrants onto state rescue craft to avoid endangering their lives if the boat capsized.

InfoMigrants said that around 3 a.m. on Friday, a land police patrol spotted a boat in distress with four people aboard and that four hours later the boat was hauled to Berck beach, south of Calais.
InfoMigrants also said that over the three days from Friday, May 22, to Sunday, May 24, 912 migrants, aboard 13 boats, managed to reach the United Kingdom by crossing the Channel according to figures from Britain’s Home Office.
The same report attributed the weekend rise to summer temperatures, stating that migrants took advantage of favorable weather to try to reach British shores over the weekend.
Numbers, scrutiny, and deals
A separate media roundup framed the Channel migration crisis as reopening tensions between Paris and London, citing a Daily Mail headline that accused French immigration police of laxity and said 681 irregular migrants crossed in small boats across the English Channel from the French coast over the weekend.

The Elaph roundup said France 24 paused on the issue and included a screenshot from the program Reading the World Press with the English headline "Asleep on the Job".
Elaph’s account also described the wider press tour as moving from Iran and the Strait of Hormuz to Russia and Cuba before reaching the migration crisis across the English Channel between France and Britain.
