Two murders, same day
Anila Baby, a 32-year-old Milpitas woman, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder tied to the stabbing death of Ann Mary Mathew at a residence in San Jose, California, and the death of Anjana Hari in Milpitas, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and San José Police Department.

The San Jose case began after officers responded to a report of a “suspicious circumstance” in the 700 block of Linda Vista Street at about 1:53 pm on August 28, where they found an unconscious and unresponsive adult woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the victim, Ann Mary Mathew, had suffered at least one stab wound and that the death was a homicide, and they quickly identified Baby as a suspect after determining the victim and Baby were known to each other.
About 90 minutes later, Milpitas police said officers responded to a reported hit-and-run at about 12:01 pm at the Mill Creek Apartments at 440 Dixon Landing Road, where witnesses reported seeing a blue SUV leave the area following the collision.
Deputy District Attorney Marisa McKeown said, “Both women were mothers. They are residents of our community, and their families are suffering terribly from the ultimate question of ‘Why would someone do this?’”
Court, evidence, and deleted video
Investigators probing the twin murders of two Malayalee women, allegedly by their close friend Anila Baby, found that video recordings from victim Ann Mary Mathew’s home had been deleted around the time she was killed, according to ABC7 News as cited by The Federal.
The Federal also reported that Anila’s sandals were found outside the victim’s residence, and that prosecutors allege Ann was strangled and stabbed at her home on Linda Vista Street in San Jose on August 28.
In Milpitas, prosecutors alleged that Anjana Hari was struck by a vehicle after walking in front of it, and The Federal said Baby was arrested after she allegedly attempted to flee the Milpitas scene in her vehicle.
CBS News said San Jose police were called to Linda Vista Street around 1:50 p.m. on Aug. 28 on reports of a “suspicious circumstance,” and that investigators determined the victim and suspect were known to each other.
Deputy District Attorney Marisa McKeown told ABC7 News, “We believe that these were willful, premeditated and extremely violent crime scenes,” as quoted by The Federal.
Next hearing and legal stakes
The Federal reported that Anila Baby appeared before a Santa Clara County court on Thursday (September 10) and that she remains in custody without bail, with a scheduled return to court on November 17 to enter a plea.

KTLA reported that Baby is accused of intentionally running over Anjana Hari, 35, in the parking lot of the Mill Creek Apartments at 440 Dixon Canyon Road in Milpitas, and that the incident occurred just before noon on Aug. 28.
KTLA also said that barely two hours later, at 1:53 p.m., San Jose Police Department officers responded to a residence in the 700 block of Linda Vista Street, where they found an unconscious and unresponsive adult female who was pronounced dead at the scene.
KTVU reported that Baby remains in custody at the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of deliberately running over and killing Hari on Aug. 28, and that San Jose police said a woman was found dead inside her home near Linda Vista Street and Holly Drive after an unexpected visitor arrived around 10:30 a.m.
If convicted, Baby could face a sentence of 50 years to life in prison, and The Federal said she faces two counts of first-degree murder and that the charges are allegations with no conviction yet.
