Romero to Atleti
Atlético Madrid agreed to sign Tottenham captain Cristian Romero for a transfer fee of 34.2 million pounds, 40 million euros, approximately 65.4 billion Korean won, with the deal announced on August 13 (Korean time).

The move ends a five-year spell in north London for Romero, who joined Tottenham in 2021 and made 156 appearances and scored 13 goals, and Tottenham retains a 15% sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
The Guardian said the package of €40m (£34.1m) is set to secure Diego Simeone his target, bringing Romero to share a team with Simeone after long-term interest.
Sports Chosun reported Romero, 28 years old, is set to be Atletico’s fourth summer signing, following the arrivals of Lee Kang-in, Morten Hjulmand, and Alejandro Grimaldo, and that Atletico’s total summer transfer expenditure will exceed 100 million pounds upon completing the transfer.

The Guardian described a turbulent 2025-26 campaign in which Romero served four separate suspensions, and said Tottenham gave him the green light to depart after talks with Spurs stalled and Atlético swooped in.
Sky Sports quoted Michael Bridge saying, "Spurs are not going to get the value for a player of his ability," as it framed Romero’s exit as part of a wider summer reshaping of Tottenham’s squad.
Sky Sports also reported that Romero was sent off twice last season during Spurs' Premier League relegation battle, missed the end of the campaign due to a knee injury, and returned to the relegation decider only after widespread criticism from Spurs supporters.
In the same Sky Sports coverage, Jamie O'Hara told the Tottenham summer special podcast, "Get rid of him," adding that Spurs had finished 17th in the last two seasons and that Romero was "a liability for us last season."
What the transfer changes
For Tottenham, the deal is tied to a 15% sell-on clause and comes as the club continues a summer of mass changes, with Sky Sports noting Spurs had signed defenders Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi and that Romero’s contract was due to run until the summer of 2029.

The Guardian said Romero wore the captain’s armband when Tottenham ended a 17-year trophy drought with victory over Manchester United in the 2025 Europa League final, but also described Postecoglou’s dismissal weeks later and a chaotic last season where only a final-day win against Everton avoided relegation.
For Atlético, the signing is presented as a long-sought defensive reinforcement for Diego Simeone, with The Guardian saying Romero will link up with his compatriot Simeone this summer and that Simeone has repeatedly talked up the quality of the Argentinian.
Sports Chosun said Romero was vice-captain under Son Heung-min during his tenure as Tottenham captain, and it reported that after additional leave following the CONCACAF Gold Cup he was scheduled to return for Tottenham’s preseason next week, but his destination has changed to Atletico.
