Liquidations top $1 billion

Crypto markets saw nearly $1 billion in leveraged positions liquidated as bitcoin, ether, and XRP slid, with CoinGlass data showing $483 million in bitcoin and ether futures liquidations over 24 hours. Ether accounted for nearly 60% of forced closures across the two largest cryptocurrencies, falling more than 6% to roughly $2,350 as about $286 million in liquidations hit ether traders.

Bitcoin declined about 3% to around $81,000 while losses spread to smaller tokens including Solana, dogecoin, and Zcash. Liquidations were automatic exchange closures when borrowed positions lose enough collateral to keep bets open, and the closures can add pressure to a falling market.

Fed uncertainty and de-risking

The sell-off was tied to uncertainty about the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision, and it weighed on cryptocurrency markets as liquidations mounted. The pullback accelerated as leveraged bets were unwound and reported roughly US$609 million in crypto positions liquidated in the last 24 hours, citing Coinglass data.

Iran’s new attacks in the Strait of Hormuz dampened hopes that maritime traffic could return to pre-war levels and boosted Brent crude above US$101 a barrel. Dan Khus, chief analyst at LVRG Research, told Bloomberg Línea that “The drop in cryptocurrency prices acts as a de-leveraging release rather than a downtrend,” framing the move as forced closures rather than a new trend.

What comes next for traders

The market capitalization of crypto assets stood on Wednesday afternoon at 2.76 trillion dollars, down 4.50% from 24 hours earlier, as leverage-driven forced sales accelerated every move downward on October 12 and 13. Liquidations fell to less than a third after the borrowed capital largely left the market, while Coinglass snapshots varied and cited 488.61 million dollars liquidated in 24 hours on October 13.

Bitcoin dominance rose to 59.4% and a pattern emerged where investors reduce risk rather than rotate, with 17 of the 25 largest crypto assets in the red when stablecoins and tokenized credit products were excluded. Outstanding ether contracts totaled about $30 billion against $52 billion for bitcoin, and liquidation figures measured the value of positions closed rather than the cash traders personally lost.
