ION Protocol for Stablecoins

Brale unveiled the ION Protocol on the 29th (local time) as an interoperability infrastructure designed to support stablecoin movement across blockchains. CoinDesk said ION Protocol enables participating stablecoins to circulate across blockchains by burning tokens on one network and creating an equivalent amount on another. Brale said the model does not require liquidity pools to be pre-funded on every supported chain, aiming to remove what it calls a growth bottleneck for customized stablecoins.

In an interview with CoinDesk, Brale founder and CEO Ben Milne said, "Liquidity between stablecoin programs is the primary obstacle to scaling customized stablecoins," and added, "There isn't enough capital in the world to solve this problem,". CoinDesk reported that the protocol is debuting with partners such as Monad, Rain, Coinflow, Turnkey, Etherfuse, Spark, and Canton, initially on the testnet before a broader deployment.

Burn-and-Mint Mechanics

Brale described ION Protocol’s core cross-chain transfer model as a burn-and-mint mechanism in which tokens are burned on the source chain and an equivalent amount is newly minted on the destination chain. Bloomingbit said Brale’s approach can improve scalability and operating efficiency for custom stablecoins without requiring pre-funded liquidity pools. CoinDesk contrasted ION with most blockchain bridges by saying the model does not require liquidity pools to be pre-funded on every supported chain.

CoinDesk also said Brale supports more than a hundred stablecoin programs across more than 30 blockchains, with customers processing billions of dollars in monthly payment volume while maintaining relatively low stablecoin balances. CoinDesk reported that ION adopts a burn-and-mint approach similar to Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) for USDC, extending the model to any participating stablecoin issuer rather than a single token.

Ethereum Foundation Governance

Separately from Brale’s stablecoin infrastructure push, the Ethereum Foundation appointed long-term contributor and Security community member pcaversaccio as a board member for a one-year voluntary term. Bitget News said the board is responsible for the organization’s long-term strategy and governance, and noted that the appointment comes amid broader leadership changes at the Ethereum Foundation. Bitget News reported that the organization has recently seen several prominent members depart and the formation of new Ethereum-related entities as spin-offs, with the Foundation refocusing on its long-term management responsibilities.

The CoinDesk coverage of ION placed the protocol’s debut on testnet before a broader rollout, while Bitget News framed pcaversaccio’s appointment as a one-year term. Together, the two developments point to ongoing infrastructure and governance activity across stablecoin interoperability and Ethereum Foundation leadership.
