Brighton end Arsenal run
Brighton & Hove Albion celebrated their 125th anniversary with a 3-0 home win over defending champions Arsenal on Saturday, ending Arsenal’s perfect start to the season and their run of seven successive matches in all competitions before the game.

Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute, Charalampos Kostoulas scored in the second on the stroke of half-time, and Chema Andres struck after the interval as Brighton moved into third place.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said, “A really disappointing result and performance. Brighton were another gear up from us. We were extremely poor technically and not respecting the game,” after the defeat.
The Straits Times also reported that Arsenal had 12 points from five games, while Manchester City could move three points clear at the top if they beat Sunderland on Sept 20.
The BBC said the match drew a record crowd of 31,944 at the Amex Stadium as Brighton produced the most comprehensive of 3-0 wins.
Arteta and De Zerbi
Arteta framed the loss as a failure to match Brighton’s intensity, telling reporters, “They were another gear from us in the basics of the game.”
The BBC’s match report quoted Fabian Hürzeler saying, “It was a special one, not only because we played against maybe the best team in England but because of the performance,” after Brighton’s 3-0 win.
In the same round, Tottenham Hotspur’s season gloom deepened as they went down 3-2 at home to Aston Villa, with the Straits Times saying Villa keeper Zion Suzuki produced several fine saves.
Roberto De Zerbi, whose side had two points and could end up bottom heading into the international break, said, “Today I was very disappointed, very sad, very frustrated for the performance. Because we can’t lose this game in this way, absolutely,” after Tottenham’s defeat.
The Straits Times also described Tottenham’s late response, with Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke scoring late on to salvage some respectability.
Table pressure and next fixtures
The Brighton result lifted them to third place with 10 points after five league rounds, while Arsenal remained second with 12 points after five league rounds, according to the Reuters account carried in Oz Arab Media.

Beyond Arsenal and Brighton, the same matchday saw Everton beat Ipswich Town 1-0 thanks to Tierney Barra’s goal in the 11th minute, while Ipswich’s equalizer was ruled out after video assistant referee commentary.
Newcastle United beat Hull City 2-1 at St James’ Park, with Joe Willock scoring in the third minute and Hol adding another in four minutes before Mohammed Ali Shaw reduced the deficit in the 67th minute.
Looking ahead, the Straits Times said Arsenal could end up with 21 days to stew over the shock result, while it also noted that Arsenal had 12 points from five games and Brighton had 10 points as the season’s next fixtures approached.
