Hormuz dispute and strikes

CENTCOM posted a “fact check” on X on July 9 insisting that “Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz,” while saying that since early May U.S. forces have helped facilitate the successful transit of more than 800 commercial vessels and 380 million barrels of crude oil.

In the same reporting cycle, Iranian state media said a “US-Israeli projectile” hit a military headquarters on the outskirts of Bushehr, and Iranian IRNA quoted deputy governor Ehsan Jahanian saying the site was attacked and hit.

The Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty account also said Bushehr is the site of Iran's lone nuclear power plant, and that authorities reported a projectile had hit the perimeter of the plant even though US officials have not acknowledged striking the site.

It further reported that two US officials said the American military is “not currently conducting strikes,” while Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said his country was prepared to resume its military campaign against Iran if necessary and “with even greater force.”

IRGC hits Al-Azraq

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it struck the US Al-Azraq air base in Jordan with 10 ballistic missiles, describing the target as an “enemy command and control centre in West Asia.”

The IRGC statement carried by Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB said, “At 2:20 pm today, IRGC aerospace fighters destroyed the enemy's command and control centre in West Asia and the enemy air base in Al-Azraq, Jordan, with 10 ballistic missiles,” and warned that further U.S. military action would trigger additional attacks on American bases in the region.

Jordan confirmed that air raid sirens were activated after missiles entered the country’s airspace, and government spokesperson Mohammad Al-Momani posted on X that “Air raid sirens were activated by the Public Security Directorate just moments ago.”

The IRGC framed the strike as the “second phase” of its response, and it said the action followed an earlier “first phase” that it described as punitive response to American strikes in Tehran.

In the same set of claims, the IRGC warned that “other US bases in the region will not be safe from our heavy fire,” while the reporting also noted that the U.S. military said it had started conducting additional strikes to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Regional escalation and fallout

The National described Iran’s IRGC missile and drone strikes as spreading across Gulf countries and Jordan after American forces launched a second round of strikes on Iran, saying the IRGC carried out a first phase against U.S. bases in Bahrain and Kuwait and later targeted Jordan's Al Azraq Air Base with 10 ballistic missiles.

It also reported that Jordan said its air defence systems intercepted and shot down eight missiles launched from Iran toward its territory, and that the interception operations resulted in the fall of missile debris but “no casualties or property damage were reported.”

The same account said the U.S. military stated its strikes were in response to attacks on three cargo ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, and it quoted CENTCOM saying, “The United States is holding Iran accountable for recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews.”

On the Iranian side, the report said Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused Washington of committing a “gross war crime” and violating the 60-day ceasefire agreement signed on June 17, and it added that Iran vowed it would punish those responsible for aggression against the country.

The National further reported that Iran’s Health Ministry said at least 14 people were killed and dozens wounded, and that a deputy governor of Iran's Bushehr province said a U.S. projectile struck the perimeter area of the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
