Pradhan quits after protests

India’s “Cockroach” youth protests pushed Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign, with Abhijeet Dipke telling supporters at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, “We have done it,” after the government accepted the movement’s demands.

The BBC reported the CJP called off its five-week-long protest hours after Pradhan resigned, as thousands of jubilant supporters continued to celebrate at Jantar Mantar, the main protest venue in Delhi.

AP said Pradhan’s resignation came after alleged exam paper leaks and irregularities in the education system, and it marked “the first significant concession” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to one of the most visible waves of public dissent it has faced in recent years.

CNN said the CJP announced it would end its nationwide protests “with immediate effect,” because the government had agreed to its demands, including compensation for families of students who, according to Indian media reports, took their own lives after learning their exam results would be scrapped.

The BBC also quoted Pradhan’s resignation message on X in Hindi, saying he had submitted his resignation to the prime minister “to prevent anti-national forces from exploiting it” and to ensure “not a single Indian student's future gets entangled in legal complexities.”

Quotes, crackdown, and demands

At Jantar Mantar, the BBC described the CJP as a satirical campaign with an AI-generated cockroach mascot that evolved into a powerful platform for young people’s anxieties and dissent, and it said Pradhan announced his resignation on X in Hindi.

AP quoted Cockroach Janta Party spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka saying, “We urge everyone to peacefully withdraw from protest sites,” after the government accepted the movement’s demands.

Al Jazeera reported that the protests had grown into a major challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, and it said the internet had been blocked at Jantar Mantar as Dipke screamed “We have done it” to thousands of supporters.

AP said tensions escalated when police moved to disperse thousands of protesters marching toward Parliament, and it added that several students were injured in the crackdown, intensifying anger among demonstrators.

CNN said Modi had not yet publicly accepted Pradhan’s resignation, while it reported that the BJP’s national president Nitin Nabin said Pradhan’s decision to step down “reflects the highest standards of integrity and selfless service in public life.”

What changes next

The BBC said the CJP called off its protest after Pradhan’s resignation, and it described the site as increasingly looking like the centre of a party while police deployed around the area said they would intervene only if they saw breaches of the law.

AP said the movement’s demands included broader reforms to India’s education system, compensation for families of students who died by suicide following exam paper leaks, and a commitment that no legal action would be taken against those who participated in the protests.

CNN reported that the government had earlier sought to ease tensions by announcing fast-track courts for cases involving exam paper leaks and saying it would introduce legislation to strengthen measures against cheating and corruption in the examination system, but protesters said it did not address government accountability.

DW said the government later announced that Pralhad Joshi would be replacing Pradhan, and it quoted the Rashtrapati Bhavan communique saying the President “has accepted the resignation of Shri Dharmendra Pradhan” with immediate effect.

In parallel, Euronews said the protests were centered around the Jantar Mantar site in central New Delhi and that tensions rose on Monday when police intervened to disperse thousands of protesters marching toward Parliament, with several students injured during that intervention and further inflaming protesters’ anger.
