Drowning in Samut Prakan
Connor Michael Murphy, a 32-year-old Texas-born fitness influencer and bodybuilder, drowned on July 7 after he jumped into a lake at a housing estate in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province, according to the Bangkok Post and Thai local reporting cited by Thought Catalog.
“A 32-year-old American fitness influencer drowned on Tuesday evening after he jumped into a lake at a housing estate in Samut Prakan province, where police also found he had vandalised his rented luxury house”
Bang Phli police deputy superintendent of investigation Pol Col Veeraphong Roobsuay said Murphy became frenzied and ran toward the water after arriving in a hired vehicle, and witnesses described him shouting, rolling on the pavement, and raising his hands as if praying.

Rescue divers searched for about 30 minutes and recovered Murphy’s body about 20 metres from shore, with police saying there were no signs of assault and sending him to Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital for an autopsy.
Thought Catalog reported that police described the initial assessment as a drowning, with exhaustion or leg cramps as possible factors, while Bangkok Post said rescuers had not entered the lake because it was more than 10 metres deep.
Erratic behavior and drugs
Witnesses and police described Murphy’s erratic behavior before he ran into the lake, including a security guard saying Murphy tried to give the driver 1,000 baht and then approached a passing car to ask for a ride into the estate.
Bangkok Post reported that investigators later searched Murphy’s rented house backing onto the lake and found black and yellow paint splashed throughout the property, including onto electrical appliances, while Thought Catalog said witnesses and the homeowner reportedly described him painting and damaging the interior of a rental home before he fled onto nearby roads.

Investigators also found two unused syringes in a car and unidentified white pills in a bag, and Thought Catalog said toxicology results are still pending while Bangkok Post reported toxicology tests for drugs will be conducted.
While police said the initial examination found only abrasions from him rolling on the road, Bangkok Post said his body showed no signs of assault and was sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Aftermath and unanswered questions
Murphy’s death triggered attention online and among friends, with Thought Catalog reporting that Tony Huge posted a tribute saying Murphy had not been depressed and was excited about upcoming projects.

Thought Catalog also reported that as of July 8 there was no official confirmation from Murphy’s family, his representatives, his verified social accounts, or higher government authorities, and it said the U.S. Embassy has been notified.
In parallel, Bangkok Post described the homeowner, identified as Ms View, saying she cherished the lakeside residence valued at around 22 million baht and that it was rented out for 35,000 baht a month for only three months.
Bangkok Post said Murphy’s girlfriend, identified only as Bee, told police the damage occurred overnight while she was asleep and that she had never seen him use drugs while they were living together, leaving the toxicology results and the exact circumstances of his behavior as the remaining open questions.
