Three unmanned maritime drones attacked the Contship Jet off Bulgaria, causing the ship to sink. All 18 crew members were rescued and evacuated.

Black Sea Drone Sinking

A Liberian-flagged container ship, Contship Jet, sank after three maritime drones struck it about 21 nautical miles off Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, the local maritime administration said Thursday. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said the drones hit the ship on Wednesday, and Bulgarian naval and border police vessels rescued all 18 crew members, including 14 Filipinos and four Ukrainians, and took them to Varna for medical checks. The ship had been en route from Israel’s port of Haifa to Constanța in Romania, and the incident occurred as defense ministers from Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey met in Sofia to discuss security in the Black Sea.

AP said some containers on board were carrying lithium-ion batteries, flammable liquids, gases and other hazardous materials, and Navy teams reported no signs of pollution after taking samples from several locations in Bulgarian territorial waters. ZIM said the Contship Jet was attacked by a drone in the Black Sea and that all crew members were safely evacuated, while it worked to secure a replacement vessel to keep service for customers.

Condemnation and Intelligence

After the talks in Sofia, the three NATO countries strongly condemned the drone attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea and called for an "immediate cessation of attacks that threaten commercial ships, maritime infrastructure and the safety of maritime activities."

The statement from Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey also said they agreed on stronger intelligence sharing, early warning capabilities and coordination in the Black Sea.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev told Parliament earlier this month that "the logic points in that direction … The problem is that we cannot prove it," while Russia had not taken responsibility for the recent attacks.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said on Oct. 15 on X that the alliance had "strengthened our posture along the eastern flank including with increasing counter-drone capabilities" in the face of increasingly frequent strikes on commercial vessels.

Marine Insight said the Bulgarian Defence Minister, Dimitar Stoyanov, confirmed that three naval drones attacked the Contship Jet and that all 18 crew members were rescued by a Bulgarian naval vessel.

Hazards, Response, and Next Steps

The Contship Jet carried 421 containers, and AP said some of the containers were carrying lithium-ion batteries, flammable liquids, gases and other hazardous materials as Bulgarian Navy teams took samples in territorial waters. Novinite said the container ship sank around midnight and that the attack took place approximately 17 nautical miles from Cape Kaliakra, inside Bulgaria’s Exclusive Economic Zone, with three breaches on its starboard side. PortalPortuario said Contships Management confirmed the vessel was attacked by three maritime drones about 15 nautical miles from the coast of Bulgaria, and it said the ship began to list between 20 and 30 degrees before the captain and crew abandoned it.

PortalPortuario added that the captain and crew were subsequently safely transferred to Varna by two local warships, and it said no serious injuries had been reported. AP said the incident followed a string of drone attacks in NATO’s exclusive economic zone this month, and it described the rescue and medical checks in Varna as Bulgarian authorities assessed the aftermath.
