Record Heat, Paris Limit
August 2026 was the world’s joint-hottest month on record, with the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) saying global temperatures reached 1.65C above pre-industrial levels.

Reuters reported that the month tied with July 2023 as the warmest month on record, with an average global surface air temperature of 16.96 C.R

The BBC said the record was driven by climate change and the rising influence of El Niño, pushing temperatures for the month 1.65C above pre-industrial levels and capping western Europe’s warmest summer past the deadly heat of 2003.
Copernicus-linked reporting described August as the first month since November 2025 to exceed 1.5°C, with the extra-polar oceans also breaking a record for their average temperature last month.
In Brussels, Reuters said the world’s oceans outside the polar regions recorded their joint-highest sea surface temperature for any month on record, as El Niño conditions strengthened in the tropical Pacific.R
Voices on Causes
Samantha Burgess, strategic lead at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, said the impact across Europe included "roads melting, train lines buckling, schools closing, hospitals completely overwhelmed, and record wildfires for the time of year".
The BBC quoted Burgess describing August as "a remarkable month in the global climate record", and said its impacts had been "increasingly being felt by communities, economies and ecosystems across the world".

UN climate chief Simon Stiell told a European parliament committee that "The climate crisis is now a continent-wide economic security emergency," and warned that political polarisation over climate action was not in voters’ interests.
Stiell also framed the fossil-fuel link directly, saying "To be soft on climate action is to be soft on inflation, and the cost of living".
Copernicus reporting tied the heat to both oceans and atmosphere, saying record sea surface temperatures were due to "global heating from burning fossil fuels" and rapidly increasing SSTs in the equatorial Pacific associated with strong El Niño conditions.
