Deep Ellum Halloween shootings

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said three separate shootings unfolded within minutes of each other in the Deep Ellum neighborhood, leaving four people dead and 15 others injured. Dallas Police shut down the neighborhood around 1 a.m., and Comeaux said investigators were still trying to determine whether the shootings were related. CBS News Texas reported the first shooting unfolded around midnight at a convenience store, where police said five people were shot in the parking lot in an apparent altercation.

Minutes later, Dallas Police said gunfire erupted along Commerce Street near South Crowdus Street, leaving three people dead, and a third shooting happened along the 2600 block of Elm Street where one person died. Comeaux said the department had witnesses and that other individuals have been arrested, while officers continued looking for additional suspects and going door-to-door to obtain surveillance video from businesses.

Investigation and public appeals

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux told reporters, "This is completely unacceptable for it to take place in Dallas, and we're going to do everything that we need to do to get everyone in custody that's responsible for this," as investigators worked to piece together the sequence of events. Comeaux said police were interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence, and he urged anyone who was in Deep Ellum during the shootings to share cellphone videos, photographs or other information with police. FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth said investigators had no evidence indicating the three shootings are related, while Comeaux described the situation as a complex and evolving investigation.

Comeaux said, "Right now, in total, we have four people that are deceased from three separate scenes, and we have approximately 15 others that have been injured," and he said the injury toll remained fluid because some victims self-transported to local hospitals. Dallas Police said detectives were questioning witnesses and actively searching for additional suspects as crime scenes remained active throughout Sunday.

Broader Halloween weekend violence

The Dallas shootings came as Halloween weekend included other violent incidents nationwide, with Los Angeles Times reporting one person was killed and eight others were wounded in Birmingham, Alabama, after the Magic City Classic.

Michael Pickett said most spectators and families had left the stadium property after the game, but the shooting happened nearby where vendors were set up along Graymont Avenue.

In Newark, Delaware, Newark Police Lt. Greg D’Elia said six people were shot shortly after 11:10 p.m. Saturday near the University of Delaware campus, and all six were transported to hospitals for treatment.

In Bloomington, Illinois, a shooting early Sunday left a 19-year-old woman dead and another woman in critical condition, and the Los Angeles Times said it was unclear whether six other injured people had gunshot wounds.

In Fayetteville, Arkansas, police said six people were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds, and the Los Angeles Times reported that no arrests had been made and that a preliminary investigation indicated an altercation preceded the shooting.
