Midterms Shift Power
Democrats captured full control of Congress after NBC News projected that Democrats won both chambers in the 2026 midterm elections, following a swift and decisive House win and a Senate victory. Democrats flipped seven Republican-held seats in Michigan, Maine, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas, and the results were described as a repudiation of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
The midterm election “debacle weakens Trump, but for now he still holds power,” while the White House account posted on X that “Trump remains your president.” The Trace said Pennsylvania Democrats won control of the state Senate and expanded their majority in the House in the November 3 elections, giving Democrats a governing trifecta for the first time since 1993.
DeSantis, Vance, and Jeffries
Ron DeSantis told reporters that Republicans’ defeat was “close to an extinction-level event for Republicans,” and he compared it to “the impact of a meteor that was felt across the United States: blue states, red states and everything in between.”
J. D. Vance blamed the “war (in Iran) was the reason for our defeat,” writing on X that “Everyone knows why we lost.”
Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic House leader, said the scale of the victory was “staggering,” and the Democracy Now! transcript described him as the House minority leader before the Democrats’ gains.
The Trace reported that Governor Josh Shapiro and Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis were both victorious, and it said their win gave Democrats a governing trifecta for the first time since 1993.
What Comes Next
Democratic majorities in both chambers would give lawmakers oversight powers to investigate a Trump administration they contend has escaped accountability, and the election results could influence the makeup of the Supreme Court and the fate of Trump’s legislative plans. Pennsylvania Democrats told The Trace in October that if they achieved a government trifecta, they would pursue gun reform measures including bills to ban homemade, untraceable “ghost guns” and to create a red flag law to temporarily take guns from people deemed a danger to themselves or others.
Adam Garber of CeaseFirePA said, “We want legislators who make us safer and who improve the quality of our lives,” while Val Finnell of Gun Owners of America said, “Our message to the Pennsylvania Legislature is: no gun control.” ABC News projected that Keisha Lance Bottoms would become the next governor of Georgia, and it said the projected win would flip the Georgia governor’s mansion blue in a state that President Donald Trump won in 2024.
