Discord Enforces Age Verification Starting September 23, Using Account Signals

Age assurance starts Wednesday
Discord will begin enforcing age verification measures for its users starting September 23, 2026, and the company says more than 90% of users will not need to verify their age. Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy wrote, "Age assurance draws strong opinions and skepticism, especially when it involves sharing biometric information or a form of ID," as the rollout follows an earlier delay tied to user concerns about privacy and data security. Discord said it will use data from existing accounts to identify "signals" indicating whether a user belongs to an adult group, a teen group, or not confirmed, including account age, device, and activity patterns.
Discord also said it does not estimate users’ ages based on message content, profile data, or demographic attributes, and it will place users into adult, teen, or unconfirmed age groups based on patterns tied to how accounts are used. Discord said users whom it cannot confirm as adults will still be able to prove their age without a biometric scan or identification, including by appealing with credit card data or age information from Apple App Store or Google Play Store accounts.
Three buckets, teen limits
Discord’s system places users into three age groups, adult, teen, or unconfirmed, and it says adults will see no change to their platform experience. Discord said teen accounts will be automatically blocked from accessing age-restricted servers or channels, and it will route message requests from non-friends to a separate request inbox. Discord said teens will also receive alerts when accepting friend requests from people who do not have mutual friends, and it described these restrictions as part of how it handles access for users not confirmed as adults.
Discord said it does not read messages or calls to determine an age estimate, and it said the individual’s age group will not be displayed on their profile or shared with other server members. Discord said users can check which group they have been sorted into under the Account Status section of the User Settings menu, and it said unconfirmed accounts can continue to use Discord without taking action unless they want access to age-restricted content, spaces, and settings.
Backlash, vendor data, and breach
Discord’s revised approach follows backlash to an earlier plan that would have required facial age estimation or an ID scan, and Discord delayed those changes after concerns about privacy and the collection of personal data. Discord said a third-party vendor working with Discord was breached last year, potentially exposing data from 70,000 users including government ID photos and selfies used for identity verification. Discord said it uses account-level signals and machine learning patterns, and it said its model has learned how a typical 15-year-old uses Discord differently from how a typical 30-year-old uses it.
