Trump vs CNN at UN
President Donald Trump berated CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins at the United Nations in New York on Tuesday, telling her, "You should not be here covering me." Trump said, "I'm surprised that CNN is here covering me," as he entered the United Nations building and addressed a group of reporters.
CNN covered Trump’s United Nations General Assembly visit using media passes issued by the UN while CNN, MS NOW and Politico awaited a Wednesday court hearing over the White House ban. Trump announced the White House ban on Friday and defended it by saying the outlets "shouldn't be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES" when covering the President of the United States.
Pool boycott and lawsuit
The White House press pool dispute centered on the TV pool, which the BBC described as having five members, CNN, ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC.
The BBC said the row began on Friday when Trump said he was banning three outlets, CNN, Politico and MS NOW, and a day later reporters found their entry badges disabled.
The five networks said in a joint statement, "No administration should restrict a news organisation because it objects to its reporting."
CNN, MS NOW and Politico sued Trump in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., seeking a temporary restraining order ahead of a Wednesday hearing before US District Judge Timothy Kelly.
What happens next
Trump told reporters in New York that he expected US District Judge Timothy Kelly to rule against him, saying, "It probably will, because this is a judge who's not a particularly fair judge."
Trump added, "I think we have a right to clean out fake news," as the administration prepared to defend the ban in federal court.
The Quartz en Français report said Judge Timothy Kelly scheduled a videoconference hearing at 3:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday after ordering the Department of Justice to respond no later than Tuesday.
The Reuters report said the White House launched a "Trump TV" stream and said it would run videos and highlights of what it called the Trump administration's achievements, while a press freedom advocate called it "a steady diet of government propaganda."
