Lavrov Arrives, Rubio Set
Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in New York for the UN General Assembly and was scheduled to address the 81st session on Saturday, while Russia’s Permanent Mission to the UN announced his arrival. The US State Department said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York on Wednesday, and the US State Department said the meeting would take place at 9 am local time.
Russia’s ministry international organizations chief Kirill Logvinov told state news agency Tass that Lavrov is set to take part in 20 international meetings at the UN. Russia’s Permanent Mission to the UN said Lavrov would hold talks with Rubio, and the US State Department said the two will meet at 9 am local time on Wednesday (1300GMT).
Energy Truce and War
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump at the United Nations headquarters in New York, and Zelenskiy said he discussed efforts to end Russia's war in Ukraine, including a potential bilateral ceasefire on energy-related targets. Zelenskyy told journalists in New York, "We are prepared for any kind of energy ceasefire," if Moscow agrees to not attack Ukraine's energy system.
Lavrov said last week Russia will not stop fighting in Ukraine while any potential talks take place, and Reuters said Lavrov will address the UN General Assembly on Saturday. Zelenskyy later said Ukraine was ready to halt attacks on energy infrastructure if Russia agreed to reciprocal measures, and Zelenskyy said he did not know Moscow’s stance on this issue.
What Comes Next
The US State Department confirmed that Rubio and Lavrov’s talks would take place on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, and the meeting would occur the same day that Zelenskyy was scheduled to address the UN General Assembly.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the meeting would be the first item on Lavrov’s agenda in New York, and Caliber.Az reported per Russian media that Lavrov was also scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Reuters said Russian strikes killed eight people in Ukraine's industrial heartland and other frontline areas, and Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday as Zelenskiy was meeting Trump.
