Elon Musk Accused of Stoking Racist Violence After Belfast Knife Attack

A knife attack in north Belfast on Monday night left a man in his 40s in hospital with serious injuries to his eyes and slash wounds to his face and back, and police later charged a 30-year-old Sudanese man with attempted murder.

Violent protests then erupted across Belfast on Tuesday, with vehicles and a building reportedly set alight and roads blocked while police maintained a heavy presence across parts of the city.

SBS News reported that authorities later confirmed the suspect had been granted refugee status in the UK in 2023 and had been given leave to remain until 2028, while DW said police had arrested a Sudanese national and declared the incident a "critical incident" but found no indications of a terrorist motive as yet.

DW also reported that footage circulating online showed members of the public stepping in before police arrived as the suspect continued attacking the victim after he had fallen to the ground, and that the suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

As unrest spread, right-wing political figures and online commentators amplified the incident into a migration debate, with SBS reporting that Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described the attack as "barbaric" and criticised the UK government's leave to remain policies.

SBS also said Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe called for "mass deportations" and an end to so-called "mass immigration," while the tech billionaire Elon Musk amplified calls for protests by reposting Tommy Robinson’s message: "Only by protesting REPEATEDLY and LOUDLY will there be any change!!"

DW reported that Keir Starmer described the attack as "sickening" and said he had "absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets," while the Northern Ireland main political leaders issued a joint statement condemning the attack as "horrific" and urging calm.

Truthout also reported that Labour Party politician Ruth Anderson said 27 people were made homeless on Tuesday night "because people went door-to-door to try and target foreign nationals to burn them out of their homes," and that Northern Ireland’s Social Democratic and Labour Party leader Claire Hanna described the violence as a “race-based pogrom.”T

Looking ahead, SBS said disorder across Belfast was stretching already limited police resources, while DW reported that Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly called for "clear, timely and transparent communication" from authorities to address any misinformation or rumor.
