$1B secured USDe lending

Ethena and FalconX launched a $1 billion secured lending facility that will deploy assets backing USDe into overcollateralized loans for institutional borrowers. The facility will direct part of USDe’s backing assets into secured institutional loans, with FalconX originating and servicing the loans through a special purpose vehicle.

Qualified custodians will hold collateral valued above each borrower’s outstanding loan, and borrowers must pledge assets worth more than the amount they receive to create a buffer if collateral loses value. Ethena will retain a first-priority security interest over assets held within the facility, while the companies said the structure can limit potential losses but does not remove market, custody, operational, or counterparty risks.

Who said what

Ethena founder Guy Young described the move as a way to reach institutional credit, saying, “Partnering with FalconX gives us a secured, overcollateralized channel into institutional credit.” FalconX Head of Credit Craig Birchall said the agreement would let FalconX provide secured financing for institutional uses as digital asset lending becomes more connected with other capital-market services.

The companies said the warehouse financing arrangement gives FalconX capital to extend secured loans to institutional clients for trading, corporate treasury operations, and payment-related services. Ethena’s June governance report placed institutional lending at about $310 million, equal to 6.9% of USDe backing as of July 3, with an estimated annual yield of between 4% and 7%.

Scaling and what’s at risk

The $1 billion facility is designed to scale as borrowing demand develops, with both companies planning to increase deployments when borrowing demand supports additional loans. FalconX joins other counterparties approved under the program during March and April, including Anchorage Digital, Maple Institutional, and Coinbase Asset Management, according to the facility description.

While the structure relies on overcollateralization and qualified third-party custodians, the sources emphasize that collateral values, margin requirements, and liquidation procedures matter because falling crypto prices can quickly reduce the protection created by overcollateralization. The agreement also leaves key terms undisclosed, with neither party disclosing the interest rates, loan durations, eligible collateral, or minimum collateral ratios that will apply across the full facility.
