Wang Steps Down
Ethereum Foundation co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang announced she would step down from her leadership role, reigniting debate over the Switzerland-based nonprofit’s management and direction.

The departure comes amid ongoing turmoil at the organization and follows a wave of at least eight senior departures over the past five months, intensifying scrutiny of internal governance and organizational culture.

Wang said she would return to a more research-focused role after being appointed earlier last year as one of two co-executive directors as part of a leadership restructuring.
The controversy is unfolding as the Foundation unveiled a new strategic framework known as "CROPS," an acronym standing for cypherpunk values, resilience, open-source development, permissionlessness and security.
Critics vs Supporters
Community reactions were sharply divided, with critics arguing the talent exodus reflects management failures while others viewed the changes as part of Ethereum’s broader push to decentralize stewardship beyond the Foundation.
Former Ethereum researcher Dankrad Feist suggested the recent executive departures reflected deeper management issues rather than disagreements over strategy, writing on X: "The people who are leaving the Ethereum Foundation are CROPS believers."

Feist added, "The problem isn't with the strategy, it's with management," framing the leadership shakeup as a loss of execution rather than a rejection of the CROPS vision.
Head of engineering at Coinbase Yuga Cohler also weighed in on X, writing, "It makes me sad to see the dysfunction at the Ethereum Foundation."
Governance Stakes
The debate over the Foundation’s role is playing out as Ethereum faces mounting pressure from rival blockchains and persistent criticism from some community members about translating technological leadership into stronger market performance.

Prominent Ethereum community member DCinvestor argued that the EF’s research and development functions should eventually be separated from its ecosystem development activities and overseen through a structure resembling an industry consortium, writing on X: "Having this function sit alongside ecosystem dev has created several instances of conflicts of interest at best".
DCinvestor nevertheless said, "If not, the decentralized protocol remains on solid ground," maintaining that Ethereum itself is resilient despite Foundation challenges.
Not everyone treated Wang’s departure as a crisis, with community member BMNR Bullz arguing the transition matters because "EF is getting smaller and more focused, while funding and stewardship move further into the wider ecosystem."
