Glamsterdam on Sepolia Oct. 6

Ethereum scheduled its Glamsterdam upgrade to activate on the Sepolia testnet on October 6, while Ethereum’s mainnet date remains undefined. Ethereum said the Sepolia activation will occur at epoch 353,024 and at 13:53:36 UTC, and it framed the update as a step in its technical roadmap.

Ethereum developers said Glamsterdam will introduce proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists, and the upgrade will also change gas pricing to better reflect the cost of creating and accessing data. Ethereum warned that contracts relying on fixed gas stipends or hardcoded gas limits may require changes, and it said Sepolia node operators must update both execution-layer and consensus-layer clients before activation.

What changes in the protocol

Ethereum Foundation said Glamsterdam will enshrine proposer-builder separation, moving the handoff between specialized block builders and validators into Ethereum’s protocol. Ethereum Foundation said block-level access lists will record the accounts and storage locations used during each block, and it described the lists as part of how the upgrade supports higher Layer-1 throughput.

Ethereum Foundation said the upgrade will change gas pricing to better reflect the cost of creating and accessing data on Ethereum, and it said contracts that rely on fixed gas stipends or hardcoded gas limits may require changes. Vitalik Buterin said Sunday that Hegotá could be the network’s last "normal" fork before development shifts toward recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus and quantum-safe cryptography.

Testing timeline and what’s at stake

Ethereum said the Sepolia testnet activation is confirmed for Oct. 6, while developers have not set dates for the validator-focused testnet Hoodi or for mainnet.

Ethereum’s roadmap description said Glamsterdam is intended to prepare Ethereum for increased Layer-1 capacity, and the upgrade combines changes known as Amsterdam on Ethereum’s execution layer and Gloas on the consensus layer.

Ethereum said the upgrade’s gas accounting changes include EIP-8037 raising and separately measuring the cost of state creation and EIP-8038 changing the cost of accessing state.

Ethereum warned that applications relying on fixed gas stipends, hardcoded gas limits or assumptions about how much gas remains during execution could require changes.
