Samba debuts in style
Manchester City routed Norwich 5-0 in the English League Cup on Thursday, with 17-year-old Floyd Samba scoring twice in his first-team debut at the Etihad Stadium.

Samba opened the scoring in the 29th minute by heading in a cross from Allan, and Rayan Cherki doubled the lead soon after before Allan made it 3-0 shortly after the break.
After the interval, Samba curled in his second goal, and Ryan McAidoo added a late fifth to complete the rout as Enzo Maresca’s side advanced to a fourth-round matchup against Brighton.
Samba described the moment as “mind blowing” in his first-team appearance, while the BBC said the debut “steals the show” as City’s new manager rewarded his academy promotion.
The win extended Maresca’s perfect start to six consecutive wins across three competitions, with Erling Haaland rested for the tie.
Maresca and Norwich react
Enzo Maresca made 10 changes from the team that won a dramatic derby against Manchester United with 10 men on Sunday, and he kept Cherki in the starting lineup from that match before Bouaddi released him for a one-on-one finish.
Maresca said of Samba, “It was satisfying not just for the two goals but for the entire performance he was good,” while the BBC quoted Samba’s confidence-building message to himself: “play your game, be you”.
Norwich, managed by Philippe Clement, made nine changes and were described as outclassed even by City’s second string, with Clement saying, “I saw several good individual performances, but it is hard to take five goals from six shots on target.”
The BBC also noted Samba played the entire 90 minutes and was named man of the match after breaking the deadlock with a header and then curling in a second.
In the build-up to the next round, City were set to face Brighton, and the BBC reported that Samba’s debut would “snatched all the headlines away” from another youth story in Manchester.
Next for City, spotlight grows
With City booking their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round, Samba’s brace set up a last-16 meeting against Brighton, and the BBC said the teenager’s performance “snatched all the headlines away” from a separate Manchester United youth saga.

Allan, a 22-year-old Brazilian forward, also marked his first City game with a goal, while the match featured Ayyoub Bouaddi’s first Etihad start after a €100 million arrival from Lille and his assist for Cherki.
Samba’s father, Christopher, was described as a former Blackburn and QPR defender, and the BBC said Samba’s debut came after he was promoted to the first-team set-up by Maresca this summer.
The BBC further reported that Samba scored 24 goals and provided 10 assists in an eye-catching first full season with the under-18s, including curling home a free-kick to help City win the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester United in May.
As City prepared for Sunderland after hosting Brighton, Samba said, “I can’t wait. Recover now, rest, the team goes again,” and added that training would resume before the weekend fixture.
