Google is set to release new “intelligent eyewear” built for its Android XR platform, with audio-only glasses designed to let Gemini interact with a user through “spoken into your ear privately rather than shown on a display.”

At Google I/O, Google and Samsung previewed the first Android XR smart glasses in partnerships with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, and the glasses are described as companion devices for smartphones that access Gemini in a hands-free form factor.

Shahram Izadi, a Google executive who spoke during Tuesday’s event, said the glasses are meant to let a wearer “stay hands free and heads up,” and he added that more information about in-lens display glasses would come later this year.

Google’s blog post also frames the lineup as two types of intelligent eyewear—audio glasses launching first “coming later this fall,” and display glasses that show information when needed—while both are designed to keep users “hands-free and heads up.”

Google’s announcements tie the glasses to Gemini-powered capabilities including turn-by-turn navigation, summarized notifications, calendar management, and contextual recommendations such as nearby coffee shops along a route.

In a demo at Tuesday’s event, Product Manager Nishtha Bhatia used the audio sunglasses to launch Gemini, connect to DoorDash, and order a coffee, then had Gemini read a summary of unread text messages and add an event to her calendar.

Google’s blog post says users can activate audio glasses by saying “Hey Google” or tapping the side of the frame, and it lists features like real-time translations that match the tone and pitch of the speaker’s voice.

The Verge’s hands-on account also describes how Google’s audio glasses rely on cameras so the Gemini assistant can see what you’re seeing, and it notes that Google says the glasses don’t have GPS and rely on your phone’s GPS instead.

Multiple outlets place the first wave of audio glasses in the fall window, with BBC saying the glasses will go on sale sometime in autumn and Google’s blog post stating “Audio glasses are launching first, coming later this fall.”

Samsung and Google are positioning the devices as AI-first wearables rather than camera glasses, and Mashable reports that pricing and exact availability were notably absent from the presentation while Samsung said the “new intelligent eyewear” is scheduled to launch in fall 2026.

The BBC also links the new push to earlier smart-glasses backlash around price and privacy, noting that Google Glass was launched in 2013 and pulled in 2015 after a UK release, while the new glasses are described as letting Gemini be spoken into the ear privately.

In parallel, CNBC frames the effort as a bid to crack a wearables market where Meta has been making waves, and it reports that Meta’s Ray-Ban and Oakley glasses sold 7 million units in 2025 as Google did not talk about privacy terms related to the forthcoming glasses.
