Autopsy: Accidental Overdose
Greenville County Coroner Mike Ellis declared that actress Hayden Panettiere died from an accidental overdose of several drugs, including fentanyl, and the 36-year-old was found unresponsive in an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina. The Greenville County Coroner's Office said the toxic effects involved fentanyl and its chemical by-product 4-ANPP, alongside alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine, and it said the autopsy found no signs of trauma that could have contributed to her death. Greenville Police confirmed that their investigation into Ms Panettiere's death would continue, and the coroner said emergency responders initiated advanced cardiac life support measures but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
ABC News reported that paramedics attended Panettiere after a 911 call and performed CPR and other advanced resuscitation efforts for more than 40 minutes before she was declared dead, and the coroner's office ruled the death an accident. ABC7 Chicago said the coroner's office ruled the cause of death as the toxic effects of fentanyl and the other four drugs in her system, and it described fentanyl as the most likely contributor to an overdose death.
Family, Investigation, and Drugs
Greenville County Coroner Mike Ellis said the autopsy found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to Panettiere's death, and the coroner's office said the death was an accident.
Panettiere's mother, Lesley Vogel, said in a statement that "Hayden was a fighter" and that her daughter's death being ruled an accidental overdose does not exonerate the supplier of the lethal dose.
Kasey Kitchen, a publicist for Ms Panettiere's family, told The Associated Press that "the investigation is still ongoing and the case is complex," and Greenville Police confirmed Tuesday that their investigation was continuing.
ABC7 Chicago reported that the Drug Enforcement Administration is investigating whether the fentanyl came from South Carolina or whether Panettiere may have brought it with her from California, and it said Panettiere flew from Los Angeles to South Carolina the day before her death.
CNN quoted forensic pathologist Dr. Kendall Von Crowns saying the combination of fentanyl with 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine was "a deathly mixture that we see often in cases."
What Comes Next
Greenville Police Department, Greenville County Coroner's Office, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration continued investigating the circumstances surrounding Panettiere's death after authorities ruled out any signs of violence.
Greenville Online reported that on Aug. 20 the U.S. DEA joined the investigation with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office and Greenville Police Department, and it said the cause of death was ruled an accidental overdose involving fentanyl and other drugs.
Greenville Online also quoted the Greenville County Coroner's Office statement that "On August 16, 2026, at approximately 1:51 PM, a 911 call was received" for a reported cardiac arrest at 701 Easley Bridge Road in Greenville.
ABC News said Panettiere's on-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach Hickerson were at the home when she was found unresponsive, and it said the police report listed medications Panettiere was taking while drug names were redacted.
ABC News reported that the autopsy found no signs of trauma that could have contributed to her death, while the investigation remained open and the case was described as complex by her family publicist Kasey Kitchen.
