Shooting Near School
An armed man opened fire near a high school in western Turkiye, wounding eight people including students in the Turgutlu district of Manisa province, the governor’s office said. The governor’s office said it received a report of gunfire near the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School at 07:59, and it said the suspect was caught by security forces and taken into custody. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said a student opened fire in front of their high school in Turkey’s western province of Manisa early on Tuesday, wounding at least 11 other pupils.
The Manisa governor’s office said the attack took place at around 8am (0500 GMT) at the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Turgutlu district, and it said the motive was not immediately clear. Police detained a 15-year-old male suspect after 11 people were injured in the shooting outside the high school in Manisa.
Detentions and Motive
The governor’s office said the suspect believed to have fired the weapon was caught by security forces and taken into custody after the incident near the vocational and technical high school. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said the assailant was caught and that the minister’s account included the detention of the assailant’s mother, father and grandfather, who owned the weapon used in the attack. Gürlek said, "When the security of our children is the issue, it is not possible for any negligence, any irresponsibility to be overlooked," as investigators examined how the child obtained the gun.
The suspect’s mother, father, and grandfather, who reportedly owned the weapon, were detained according to the country’s justice minister Akın Gürlek. The motive behind the attack was not immediately clear, and three national investigators from the education ministry were sent to Manisa.

Security Measures and Impact
Turkiye’s government faced renewed pressure after the April school shootings, and the Manisa attack came as officials continued to implement new security measures for the 2026-2027 academic year, including tighter gun controls. The incident was the third school shooting in Turkey this year and came as the government continued to grapple with how to address the recent spate of violence. The governor’s office said the injured were rushed to hospitals after the shooting early on Tuesday, and it said one of the injured was in critical condition.
Turkey’s education ministry responded by sending three national investigators from the ministry to Manisa, and it quoted the ministry saying the incident had "deeply saddened our nation, and our educational community in particular." Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci and Education Minister Yusuf Tekin were going to Manisa to carry out inspections.
