Hamas condemns Hebron raids
Hamas condemned an Israeli military campaign across the occupied West Bank, describing it as “criminal aggression” and saying the escalation would not break Palestinian resolve. Hamas said the latest campaign, particularly in Al-Khalil (Hebron), included raids, arrests, home demolitions, and forced displacement, and it called for a unified Palestinian response and serious international action. Hamas warned that Israeli escalating repression and settler attacks required Palestinians to respond together, and it said the occupation’s coercive measures would not force Palestinians to abandon their legitimate rights.
Hamas reaffirmed its solidarity with Palestinians facing the escalation and said, “The occupation’s campaigns and the escalation by its criminal settlers against our people will only bring more anger and a stronger commitment to the path of resistance.” The Israeli occupation forces launched a large-scale military operation across Al-Khalil (Hebron) in the southern occupied West Bank overnight and at dawn Saturday, after a shooting operation a day earlier killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded four others.
Netanyahu orders lockdown
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised IDF troops for stopping what he said would have been a major attack targeting civilians, and he said his forces were operating with reinforcements to thwart terrorism.
Netanyahu said he ordered a cordon around the city of Hebron and to block off all travel through the West Bank, and he later vowed to retaliate after Palestinian gunmen killed two soldiers near Hebron.
The New York Times said Israeli troops erected roadblocks and closed the main entrances and exits to Hebron, and it reported that residents would be allowed to leave through designated checkpoints.
Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said the soldiers had prevented “an even more serious attack,” and the Israeli military said a large cache of ammunition was found in a vehicle used by the attackers.
The Jerusalem Post said Netanyahu announced Likud events scheduled for Friday morning would be canceled after the attack, and it said Netanyahu vowed to pursue Hamas terrorists and those who sent them “wherever they are and at all times.”
Raids, evacuations, and political fight
Israeli forces raided 13 towns in the West Bank and arrested dozens of Palestinians, while hundreds of families in the Ain al-Diriyeh area near Hebron were ordered to evacuate their homes under threat, according to media reports. In the south of Nablus, Israeli forces breached several Palestinian homes in the towns of Jalud and Qaryut, while Israeli forces besieged the home of one of the attackers in the Jalda neighborhood of Hebron. The Israeli army said its operation in Hebron would last for several days and that it was conducted with the participation of the Shin Bet and Border Police, including house searches and questioning of suspects.
The Guardian said Israel launched a campaign of collective punishment in Hebron after gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers and injured three near a checkpoint, and it reported that Israel’s high court issued a temporary order to stop demolitions soon after they began. The Guardian quoted Mohammed Dahleh saying, “What we saw today was an attempt to copy the illegal practices used in Gaza, in the heart of the West Bank,” while Itamar Ben-Gvir called for dismantling the Palestinian Authority and demilitarising it in a statement on social media.
