Bronx shooting during ICE operation

An ICE agent shot a man in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx in New York City during a targeted enforcement operation on Thursday afternoon, and the Department of Homeland Security said the man was alive and at a local hospital. The Department of Homeland Security said the operation was to arrest a criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic with a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny, and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he would ask US President Donald Trump to remove federal immigration agents from the city as tensions flared over the latest shooting involving ICE.

The New York Police Department said a man had been shot around 4:00 pm in Marble Hill during an altercation with federal agents, and Mamdani said a five-year-old child was in the car when the altercation occurred. The Department of Homeland Security later confirmed that the shooting occurred during an operation of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and it said ICE officers immediately rendered aid.

Protests, demands, and rival claims

Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the situation “unconscionable and incredibly serious,” and he said he would demand that Trump end all ICE enforcement actions in the city. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she expects “federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” and she also asked that any body camera footage be released to the public. Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, said the incident was “another reminder of the unchecked, rampant violence ICE has been spreading throughout our communities,” and he demanded an immediate investigation and accountability.

The Department of Homeland Security said the man was from the Dominican Republic and had “a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny, and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession,” while the BBC reported Trump had not yet commented publicly on the shooting. Protesters gathered at the scene and chanted “we want justice” and “ICE off our streets now,” as the shooting sparked angry protests from local residents and elected officials.

What happens next in New York

The Department of Homeland Security said ICE officers immediately rendered aid and that the individual is alive and at a local hospital, while it did not state how many officers fired their weapons or why. The Department of Homeland Security initially claimed the person targeted had associations with a Dominican gang, but it later issued a revised statement removing that sentence, according to AFP. The New York Police Department said it was not involved in the incident, and the shooting happened around 4 p.m. near Marble Hill Avenue and West 225th Street.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he called the president, and he wrote on X that he would demand an end to ICE enforcement actions in New York City. New York officials and immigration advocates pushed for an investigation and for the release of body camera footage, with Kathy Hochul saying New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.
