IndiGo Delhi-Chennai flight diverted to Hyderabad after power bank fire mid-air. Cabin crew extinguished blaze and landed safely at Hyderabad airport.

Power Bank Fire Midair
An IndiGo flight operating as flight 6E 6115 from New Delhi to Chennai diverted to Hyderabad after a passenger's personal electronic device, reportedly a power bank, caught fire midair. The fire was doused with the help of a fire extinguisher and videos showed flames coming out from the bag while passengers shouted "fire, fire" in panic.
The aircraft landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and the incident occurred aboard flight 6E6115, operating an Airbus A321-251N aircraft. The power bank was kept inside a bag stored in an overhead bin, and a passenger video showed people attempting to tackle the flames with their bags as the fire spread inside the cabin's overhead compartment.

Crew Response and Panic
IndiGo said smoke was detected from a passenger's personal electronic device and that the cabin crew responded promptly to bring the situation under control. The cabin crew eventually extinguished the fire using fire extinguishers, and the pilots diverted the aircraft to Hyderabad in line with established safety procedures.
IndiGo's statement said "the cabin crew responded promptly and the situation was brought under control" and said an alternate aircraft had been arranged to continue the journey to Chennai. Panicked passengers removed luggage from the overhead compartment as flames emerged, and the airline diverted the flight after smoke was detected from a customer's personal electronic device.

Rules, Risk, and Aftermath
IndiGo's baggage policy permits power banks and spare or loose lithium batteries only in hand baggage, and the policy states they "must remain within the passenger's personal reach at all times". The policy states power banks "must not bestowed in overhead compartmentsor checked baggage" and described the Sunday incident as involving fire in the overhead compartment.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation issued a Dangerous Goods Advisory Circular in November 2025 prohibiting the use of power banks to charge devices during flights and mandating that power banks and spare batteries must not be stored in overhead compartments. Vandana Singh, Chairperson (Aviation Cargo), Federation of Aviation Industry in India (FAII), said "Instead of an outright ban, the aviation industry should focus on strengthening existing safety protocols" after an IndiGo flight was evacuated on landing in Chandigarh on March 5, 2026 after a passenger's power bank caught fire.
