Midterms and Warmongering
Iran’s adviser to the Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Hamidreza Moghaddamfar said the “heavy defeat of the United States in warmongering against Iran” caused “the scandal that happened to Trump's party in the U.S. elections.”
ACLED warned that after “30 maritime attacks by Iran last month” and “fresh U.S. strikes on Iranian facilities,” “a broader conflict is in danger of erupting again.”
Trump told Fox News the midterm results were partly due to the conflict with Iran and the resulting rise in oil prices, and Trump told The Wall Street Journal he did not regret launching the joint U.S.-Israeli attack, saying: "I did the right thing. I would have done it again."
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement: "President Trump’s foreign policy decisions have never been motivated by politics."
Iranian Officials React
Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf posted on X that “Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message.” Iranian MP Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Iran “should be congratulated” for the losses Republicans faced in the midterms “as he [Trump] truly deserved such a defeat.”
Iran International cited a message attributed to Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei saying: "If anyone still hopes for a change in behavior or a shift between political parties and factions in the system of domination, they are gravely mistaken," and the message warned of reprisals if there were any further American strikes. Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara argued the US election was “a setback for warmongers and populist nationalists,” and he said the result reflected public opposition to further wars in the Middle East and unconditional US support for Israel.
Escalation Risks and Next Steps
The IRGC said Wednesday that four oil tankers caught fire after hitting naval sea mines in the waterway, following U.S. strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island on Tuesday and operations against Iranian military assets along the southern coast. ACLED warned that renewed large-scale U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran could trigger “a broader campaign of Iranian retaliation against critical infrastructure across the Gulf,” threatening energy exports, regional trade and economic activity.
Culture Minister Abbas Salehi said the results of the US midterm elections reflected “growing opposition among young American voters to the warmongering policies of President Donald Trump.” Salehi said young people had largely voted against Trump's “war policies” and the “child-killing actions” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and he concluded: “This makes it possible to be more hopeful about the future of the world.”
