IRGC targets US voters
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released a PDF open letter to Americans urging the United States government under President Donald Trump “must be changed” and telling people to “wake up” and “wrest control back from corrupt politicians.” IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi told reporters on Tuesday that the American people are unaware of the “harms” of the Trump administration’s campaign, and he said, “If they were aware of these realities, they would definitely think differently, and they would definitely put pressure on their administration.”
The IRGC letter accused the Trump administration of misleading Americans about the war, Iran’s nuclear programme and who controls the Strait of Hormuz, and it argued that the United States has failed to meet its stated goals. The IRGC letter also declared Iran the victor in the war, saying, “The United States and Israel expended thousands of bombs and missiles,” but “they failed to achieve any of their declared objectives.”
Nuclear and Strait claims
Hossein Mohebbi told reporters on Tuesday that the “enemy [US] knows that Iran is not after nuclear weapons,” and he said the United States’ problem with Iran is “not its nuclear program, but its vast size that they want to destroy.” The IRGC spokesperson also pushed back on US assertions about Iran losing leverage over the Strait of Hormuz, saying, “does not mean the Strait is open.”
Reuters reported that the IRGC urged American voters in the midterm elections to reject President Donald Trump’s policies and embrace a peaceful coexistence offer in a 25-page letter. The Reuters report said the IRGC accused Trump in the letter of concealing the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program, which Israel views as an existential threat, and of attacking the effectiveness of sanctions Tehran imposes on Gulf oil.
War messaging and pressure
The IRGC letter told Americans, “you are the ones who empower, with your votes, the government and allow it to do what it does,” and it urged them to “take back control.” The letter also framed “Death to America” as a message aimed at the “diabolical ruling elite whose seat of power is the White House,” and it said, “‘Death to America’ is a prayer for the eradication of the diabolical ruling elite.”
Tehran Times said the IRGC letter urged Americans to break with US war policies and reconsider what it said they have been told about US wars in West Asia, while also saying the letter was addressed to scholars, students and media workers. The Tehran Times report quoted the letter saying, “This is not a call for hostility toward Americans, but for them to hold their own leaders accountable.”
