Kinahan extradited to Dublin
The United Arab Emirates extradited alleged Irish cartel boss Daniel Kinahan to Ireland, and the 49-year-old was expected to appear before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin after leaving Dubai aboard an Irish government jet on Sunday. The BBC said Kinahan was arrested in Dubai under a warrant issued by the Irish courts in April, and it reported that he was expected to be flown back to Ireland on Sunday and then taken to the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.B
ABC News reported that an Irish military plane carrying Kinahan, 49, was expected to land Sunday evening at an airport outside of Dublin, and that he would be held at the high-security Portlaoise Prison about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southwest of the capital. Al Jazeera said the extradition followed a final ruling by the Dubai Court of Cassation and was carried out under an extradition treaty between the UAE and Ireland, after Kinahan was arrested in Dubai on an Irish warrant for alleged serious organised crime offences.
Security operation and denials
Irish media reported that a major security operation was under way ahead of Kinahan’s arrival, involving armed police, the military and prison authorities, with RTE saying he would be taken directly to the Special Criminal Court before being transferred to Portlaoise Prison. ABC News said the security precautions would include armed police, members of the armed forces and the prison service, and it cited RTE reporting that the prison service recently acquired a bomb-proof escort van to transport organized crime suspects.
The BBC reported that Kinahan’s lawyer told BBC Panorama that he has no criminal record or convictions and that allegations about him being a crime boss are false and have no evidential basis. BIn a joint statement by the UAE and Ireland, Jim O’Callaghan and Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi said the extradition sent “a clear message” that suspected perpetrators of serious and organised crime would find “no safe haven from justice”.
US sanctions and charges
The BBC said the US government imposed sanctions on Kinahan in April 2022 after he and other members of his family were identified as leaders of the Kinahan organised crime cartel, and it reported that a reward of up to $5m (£3.84m) was offered by the US for information on the three most senior Kinahan gang members.B
ABC News said the U.S. Treasury Department described the Kinahan organized crime network as involving drug smuggling and money laundering, and it quoted the U.S. Treasury saying the Kinahan Organized Crime Group has been involved in a gang war with another group in Ireland and Spain since February 2016.
The BBC also reported that Kinahan had ties to the world of sport via his now defunct boxing management company MTK Global, which represented more than 100 boxers including Tyson Fury and Carl Frampton.B
Al Jazeera said Kinahan was expected to be charged in Dublin in connection with running a transnational criminal organisation, and it quoted the joint Emirati-Irish statement saying he was accused of leading an organised criminal group, murder and illicit trafficking of narcotics pursuant to an official request submitted by Irish authorities.
