Isar Spectrum Reaches Orbit
German startup Isar Aerospace launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit from Andøya Spaceport in Arctic Norway on Saturday, becoming the first commercial flight to reach orbit from continental Europe.
“No rocket had ever reached orbit from Western European soil — until today.”
The uncrewed two-stage Spectrum lifted off from Andoya spaceport north of the Arctic Circle and, after about seven minutes, settled into an elliptical path around Earth, according to the Space.com account of the launch.
Isar said on X, "We're in orbit! And just made European history," while Norway’s Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth said the ability to launch from Andoeya strengthens "Norwegian and European security".
The launch followed months of delays tied to technical or safety issues, and it was Isar’s second launch after a prior attempt that plunged into the sea and exploded shortly after takeoff from the same site.
Officials Frame Autonomy
Norway’s Cecilie Myrseth framed the launch as a security and independence milestone, saying, "The fact that we can now launch satellites from Andoeya strengthens Norwegian and European security in the turbulent times we live in," in a statement carried by Reuters.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Isar’s launch site in March, underscoring Europe’s push for autonomy as the global order shifts under U.S. President Donald Trump, Reuters said.

Isar’s Daniel Metzler also tied the mission to constraints on access to space, telling Reuters ahead of Saturday’s launch, "Access to space remains one of the biggest constraints for the space industry and national security architecture,".
Reuters reported that the Spectrum was designed for small and medium-sized payloads and carried five small satellites plus an in-flight technological experiment, with Isar monitoring developments as the flight continued.
Next Steps and Capacity
Isar said it secured about €200 million from the European Space Agency to help fund development of new rockets and expand its testing and launch infrastructure, and it is also developing a second launch site in Canada.

The company’s manufacturing plans near Munich are described as enabling production of more than 30 Spectrum rockets per year, with the launch industry seeking more capacity and independence from other delivery systems.
Space.com reported that Spectrum’s upper stage deployed five cubesats and one non-deployable scientific experiment after a circularization burn, with the rocket’s closest approach estimated at 112 miles (180 kilometers) and a farthest point of 311 miles (500 km).
With Europe betting on competition between Isar and other companies, Reuters placed the launch in a broader market context that includes SpaceX, which launches from the United States, and French ArianeGroup, which uses a spaceport in South America’s French Guiana.
