Altalena found intact
Israel says it has found the sunken 1948 Altalena ship off Israel’s coast at a depth of 503 meters, with Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announcing the discovery on August 24.

Eliyahu said, “At 12:30am, at a depth of 503 metres, west of the coast of Israel, the Altalena ship was located intact – 78 years after that painful and seminal event that shook the young State of Israel,” while Ben-Gvir added that the discovery closes a “historic chapter in one of the most painful and formative events in the history of Israeli society”.
The ship’s 1948 voyage began when the Altalena departed from the French city of Marseille in June 1948, carrying about 5,000 rifles and 450 machine guns and ammunition for the Irgun organization led by Menachem Begin.
In 1948, negotiations collapsed after David Ben-Gurion demanded the ship and its cargo be handed over to the newly created Israeli army, and Israeli forces opened fire on Ben-Gurion’s orders, killing sixteen Irgun members and three soldiers.
Netanyahu joins celebrations
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the discovery and said the vessel could become a symbol for current and future generations, while France 24 described the timing as a run-up to legislative elections in October.
In a video clip, Netanyahu said, “For me, and I am certain for you as well, citizens of Israel, this is an emotional moment, a defining moment,” and that the ship “will be a tangible symbol for our generation and generations to come”.
UA.NEWS reported that the Haaretz editorial board called the authorities’ emphasis on the discovery a calculated political move ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27, and it also cited Jerusalem Post author Amotz Asa-El saying the plan to raise the remains could be aimed at reviving a political myth and changing the electoral agenda.
The UA.NEWS account also quoted historian Saul Friedländer, who was aboard the Altalena at the age of 15, calling for the memory of the ship not to be used in election propaganda.
Maritime archaeology specialist Ehud Galili told Haaretz that raising the ship, weighing about 18,000 tonnes and partially embedded in the clay seabed, would be an extremely difficult and costly operation for which Israel has no available means.

The UA.NEWS account added that Netanyahu has long taken part in annual memorial events honoring those killed on the Altalena, and it reported that he called Ben-Gurion’s decision to open fire on the ship tragic while saying the vessel carried weapons needed by fighters in the war for independence.
France 24 described the Altalena as an arms-smuggling ship sunk off the coast of Israel in 1948 after a confrontation between the nascent army and the right-wing Irgun militia led by Menachem Begin, and it said the standoff nearly escalated into civil war.
It also recalled that Begin asked his fighters to surrender with words that became famous: “There will be no civil war with the enemy at our gates,” and it noted that the ship remained visible off the coast for nearly a year before being towed out to sea and sunk in 1949.
UA.NEWS reported that University of Haifa historian Ofira Gruweis Kowalsky said the incident could have escalated into a civil war, but Begin helped avert such a development, and it said the discovery could bring the confrontation between the Israeli right and left back to the forefront of public debate.
