This decision comes amid intense international pressure, particularly from former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump has issued a stern ultimatum to Hamas to accept a 20-point peace plan or face severe military consequences.

The plan, supported by several countries, calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the establishment of a transitional government in Gaza.

Trump has set a deadline for Hamas to comply, warning of unprecedented military action if they refuse.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with over 66,000 Palestinians killed, many of them women and children, due to Israeli military actions. The UN and various humanitarian organizations have condemned the situation, labeling it as genocide.

Despite the temporary halt in bombings, the blockade and military pressure continue to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis, with severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. The international community, including South Africa and Turkey, has called for an end to the violence and the release of hostages.

Peace Plan Negotiations Overview

Hamas has shown willingness to negotiate the terms of the peace plan, agreeing to release hostages in exchange for a ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal. However, they have rejected demands for disarmament and insist on a broader Palestinian consensus for any future governance of Gaza.

“Hamas remains active and demands a ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal in exchange for releasing hostages, demands rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.”
The Globe and Mail

The plan, which excludes Palestinian statehood, has faced criticism for favoring Israeli interests and failing to address key Palestinian demands. Mediators like Egypt and Qatar are involved in facilitating the negotiations, with Trump setting a strict deadline for Hamas to accept the plan.

International Reactions to Peace Plan

The international response to the peace plan has been mixed, with some countries supporting the initiative while others criticize it for not adequately addressing the root causes of the conflict. The UN and several human rights organizations have called for a more comprehensive approach that includes Palestinian self-determination and addresses the humanitarian crisis. Critics argue that the plan's focus on disarmament and governance changes without ensuring Palestinian rights and statehood is insufficient for lasting peace.
