Israeli Forces Strike Deir Al-Balah Tent, Killing At Least Three Palestinians Including 8-Year-Old

Israeli forces struck a tent sheltering displaced people in the central Gaza Strip on Monday, killing at least three Palestinians including an 8-year-old boy and his grandfather, medical officials said.

The AP report said the drone strike hit a neighborhood in Deir al-Balah, and Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital identified the fatalities as Hassan al-Hanagra and his 8-year-old grandchild, Malik Abu Shawish, along with another man.

In a separate incident, the Israeli military said it killed Zaher Abu Salem in southern Gaza, describing him as a member of Islamic Jihad involved in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel that triggered the war.

NBC News reported that Israeli strikes in southern and central Gaza on Monday killed at least eight people including two children, and it said a drone strike in Deir al-Balah killed at least three Palestinians including Malik Abu Shawish and his grandfather.

NBC News also said the Gaza Health Ministry maintains detailed casualty records that are seen as generally reliable by U.N. agencies and independent experts, while it does not give a breakdown of civilians and militants.

France 24 reported that Gaza Civil Defense said Israeli airstrikes have killed 10 people including a child in the northern Gaza Strip, and it said the Palestinian Civil Defense transported the victims to Al-Chifa Hospital in Gaza City.

France 24 quoted Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for the emergency rescue organization operating under Hamas’ authority, saying, "Four martyrs, including a child, and several wounded were transported to Al-Chifa Hospital in Gaza City".

The same France 24 report said Israel and Hamas accuse each other of breaking the truce, and it cited the Gaza Health Ministry figures that "757 Palestinians" were killed since October 10, 2025.

Le Figaro said nine Palestinian police officers were killed on Sunday in an Israeli strike on their vehicle in the Gaza Strip despite a ceasefire that went into effect on October 10, 2025 between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist movement announced.

Le Figaro also said Hamas specified that the head of police in the central region, Colonel Iyad Abou Youssef, was among the nine policemen killed, and it reported that the Israeli army was verifying the information when asked by AFP.

Le Figaro said the strikes occurred as a Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo on Saturday, and it reported that the Hamas delegation in Cairo is set to meet Egyptian officials on Sunday after speaking with the EU’s High Representative for Gaza, the Bulgarian diplomat Nickolay Mladenov.

Le Figaro reported that the discussions included ongoing Israeli violations, incursions and crimes, and it said Hamas stressed the need to advance the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, notably its second phase, and to open the crossings into Gaza to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.

It added that the United States announced in mid-January the move to the second phase of Donald Trump’s plan to finally end the war, and it said this phase includes a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, and the deployment of an international stabilization force.

PBS reported that while the heaviest fighting has subsided since a ceasefire took hold in October, Israeli forces have carried out near-daily strikes, killing 1,045 Palestinians including more than 360 women and children, according to health officials in Gaza.

PBS said Israel says it is targeting militants, often saying they were planning attacks on Israeli troops who hold more than 60% of the Gaza Strip, and it reported that five Israeli soldiers have been killed in militant attacks since the ceasefire.
