Drowning in Norway
A 26-year-old Israeli man from the Jerusalem area drowned in Norway after falling from a vessel while traveling with friends, ZAKA said on Thursday. ZAKA said its hotline received a report that the man had fallen from the vessel during the trip and had been missing for several hours, before he was later found dead.
The Foreign Ministry said Israel’s Embassy in Oslo and the Foreign Ministry’s department for Israelis in distress abroad have been handling the case with local authorities since receiving the report. The Foreign Ministry said officials are in contact with the man’s family and are accompanying them during the difficult period.
ZAKA coordinates repatriation
ZAKA’s International Division said that once it received the report, its international team began working with local authorities to ensure the deceased was treated with dignity and to secure the release of his body for repatriation to Israel. Baruch Nidam, head of ZAKA’s International Division, said, “Immediately upon receiving the report at the ZAKA hotline, the ZAKA International Division team began handling matters concerning the dignity of the deceased and working with local authorities with the aim of securing the release of the deceased ahead of his transfer to Israel for burial and the funeral,”.
ZAKA said it was working together with Menuha La’ad, the Foreign Ministry, and other relevant authorities to bring the man’s body to Israel for burial as soon as possible. The Foreign Ministry said the embassy and the department assisting Israelis in distress abroad were in contact with the family and supporting them during the difficult time.

Conflicting ages and details
Another report said a 24-year-old man from Jerusalem died as a result of drowning during a kayaking trip in Norway, while an Israeli who was with him was injured and transported to a hospital for treatment. That account said ZAKA, in coordination with the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, began contacting Norwegian authorities to prevent an autopsy of the young man’s body and to work on his release and transport to Israel for burial.
A separate Hebrew-language report said ZAKA’s international unit hotline received a report this morning (Thursday) of a serious kayaking accident in Norway in which a 26-year-old Israeli, a resident of the Jerusalem area, was killed. That Hebrew-language report said ZAKA began working with relevant authorities and entities in Norway, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the aim of preventing the autopsy of his body, bringing about its release for burial, and arranging its transfer to Israel.
