Teen footballer dies

A 17-year-old Palestinian footballer, Fadi Hamdallah al-Nassan, died Saturday morning from injuries after being shot during an attack by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Football Association and officials.

A Palestinian teenager, a member of the youth national football team, died on Saturday, several days after being injured during an attack by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, according to his family and officials

20 Minuten20 Minuten

The Palestine Football Association said he was hit in the thigh by an explosive bullet, had to undergo an amputation, and later died of his injuries, while his father Hamdallah Al-Nassan told AFP, "He loved football. When the settlers attacked, he heard the screams of girls and women ... he went to the scene and he was killed."

Dozens of mourners dressed in black carried his body from the Palestine Hospital in Ramallah to his village for burial, and the official Palestinian agency Wafa gave the same shooting circumstances, adding that two other villagers were hit by rubber bullets and a ten-year-old boy was struck on the head by a concussion grenade.

AFP video described the procession from the Palestine Hospital in Ramallah, and the TRT World report said the Palestine Football Association accused Israeli forces of shooting Nassan while settlers were attacking the village on July 11.

The Reuters-based tally cited by 20 Minuten and TRT World said that since the Gaza war began, violence has intensified in the West Bank, with at least 1,088 Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers, while official Israeli figures cited by 20 Minuten put at least 46 Israelis killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations.

Competing casualty frames

Al Jazeera’s account of the same incident said Palestinian teenage footballer Fadi al-Naasan died a week after being shot by Israeli forces during an Israeli settler attack on his village northeast of Ramallah, placing the death amid a surge in settler violence against Palestinian communities.

In the same reporting chain, TRT World described the funeral procession from the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah to his village for burial, and it quoted his father again: "When the settlers attacked, he heard the screams of the girls and women," Al-Nassan said.

20 Minuten also framed the broader West Bank toll by citing an AFP tally based on Palestinian Health Ministry data, saying at least 1,088 Palestinians from the territory had been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers, while also citing official Israeli figures that at least 46 Israelis had been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations.

The Times of Israel added a different accounting for settler violence, saying the IDF recorded 867 incidents of nationalistic crime and settler violence in 2025 and 682 incidents in 2024.

Across the coverage, the incident’s immediate details remained consistent—an attack on July 11, a thigh wound, an amputation, and death on Saturday—while the surrounding statistics and framing varied between AFP-based tallies and Israeli official incident counts.

Wider Gaza-war spillover

The incident was reported as part of a wider pattern of violence in the occupied West Bank since the Gaza war began in October 2023, with TRT World stating that Israeli soldiers or illegal settlers have killed at least 1,088 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since October 2023.

Countercurrents linked the death of Fadi Hamdallah Al-Nassan to intensified settler attacks and cited Palestinian Health Ministry figures saying over 1,150 Palestinians, including 239 children, have been killed and more than 11,885 injured in the West Bank since October 7, 2023.

Countercurrents also quoted Allegra Pacheco, director of the West Bank Protection Consortium, saying, "No one is putting the pressure on Israel or on the Israeli authorities to stop this and so the settlers feel it, they feel the complete impunity".

In the same Countercurrents account, Peace Now said, "To force Palestinians out, settlers resort to harassment, intimidation and violence, "with the backing of the Israeli government and military", and it cited a UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warning that Israeli policies aim to uproot Palestinian communities.

With the Gaza war’s spillover into the West Bank continuing in the sources, the death of the footballer underscores the stakes described by the reporting: displacement pressures, ongoing settler violence, and the risk of further killings as violence intensifies after October 7, 2023.
