Escalation and readiness: Axios quoted a U.S. official and two other sources saying Israel informed the Trump administration before launching the strike, and confirmed that Hezbollah’s continued attacks constitute 'a violation of the ceasefire and give it the right to strike Beirut.' A Jerusalem Post correspondent, citing an Israeli official, said that if Hezbollah fires at Israel, the latter 'will respond by striking its command headquarters in the Beirut suburb,' noting that this would be in line with ceasefire understandings. According to the newspaper’s Israeli correspondent, Netanyahu is expected to hold a late Sunday meeting with Katz following developments in Lebanon and the Iranian threats. Separately, the Israeli Army Radio reported that authorities asked residents of northern Israel to prepare for a possible Hezbollah bombardment in the coming hours. By contrast, Channel 12 said there has been no change yet to the internal home-front instructions in northern Israel. In a related development, Walla reported that the Israeli occupation army began limited ground operations on the outskirts of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon to root out militants and explosive devices. The site added that the northern regional commander is pushing to destroy Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in the Nabatieh area, and that the military assesses Nabatieh, the largest Hezbollah stronghold in Lebanon, would be a major blow given Beirut’s perceived American protection.

Israeli forces also ordered the evacuation of Zakouk el-Mefdi on the outskirts of Tyre, as the Israeli army carried out raids that targeted Zakouk el-Mefdi at the Maaraka intersection and Srifa in the Nabatieh district, along with Kfar Tebnit, Nabatieh el-Fouqa and Qlaouiyé.

Hezbollah said it carried out up to now 16 attacks against the Israeli army, including nine targeting gatherings of soldiers and military vehicles near Yohmor el-Chaqif (Nabatieh), and it claimed it forced an Israeli Hermes 450 drone to turn back after targeting it with a surface-to-air missile over Iqlim el-Touffah.

The Lebanese Health Ministry said the Tyre strike was carried out late in the afternoon on Tyre, and the death toll from Israeli strikes earlier in the day in the Nabatieh district stood at two dead, one in Doueir and the other in Aadchit.

Evacuation orders and disputes

Lebanon’s Public Health Emergency Operations Center said the cumulative number of victims of Israeli attacks since March 2 had risen to 3,593 killed and 10,990 injured, while the Israeli Defense Forces said it opened an investigation into a strike that killed three Lebanese soldiers patrolling on the Khardali–Kfar Tebnit road.

UNIFIL condemned the attack as a "flagrant violation" of Lebanon's sovereignty, its territorial integrity, and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and Nabih Berri rejected the Israeli justifications by stating that the strike is in no way an error or an accident.

In the southern suburbs of Beirut, Israel’s army announced it carried out an airstrike on what it described as a "valuable target" based on intelligence guidance, while Axios reported the strike targeted a Hezbollah command center in the suburb.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the army, under the direction of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, carried out strikes targeting what it described as "terrorist facilities" in the southern suburb of Beirut in response to Hezbollah firing toward Israel.

Ceasefire fragility and totals

Hezbollah said its Sunday attacks were in defense of Lebanon and its people and in response to Israeli violations of the ceasefire, and it described a series of operations including targeting a leadership headquarters of the Israeli army in Naqoura with an Ababil assault drone.

The group said the attacks came despite a fragile ceasefire since April 17 that Washington extended to early July, and it cited a joint statement of intent after four rounds of negotiations in Washington that called for a complete cessation of Hezbollah fire and the removal of its elements from the area south of the Litani River.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Health said on Wednesday that the total toll of the Israeli aggression stood at 3,269 killed and 9,840 wounded after 56 killed and 103 injured were recorded in the last 24 hours, while the Lebanese Army said a serviceman was killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted the Kefarman–al-Khirdali road in the south.

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz pledged to continue the military campaign against Hezbollah, and the Israeli army said it would continue to operate in Lebanon against Hezbollah and strike the southern suburbs of Beirut in retaliation for any attack on northern Israel.
