Budget clash over IDF
Israel’s Finance Ministry pushed back Sunday against warnings from senior defense officials that the military is nearing a financial breaking point, saying defense leaders are mismanaging the budget and making misleading claims about billions of shekels in additional funding.

A senior Finance Ministry official said meeting the defense establishment’s demands could eventually push military spending to nearly one-third of Israel’s entire state budget, adding that “That would be a situation unprecedented anywhere in the world.”
Earlier Sunday, defense officials warned that the military faced serious shortages because the Finance Ministry’s Budget Department was blocking the transfer of 15 billion shekels, or about $5.1 billion, in funding agreed upon.
Senior defense officials said the military was facing acute shortages of Humvees and munitions, and they said major purchases from the United States, including a deal for Apache attack helicopters, had not gone ahead.
Finance Ministry officials rejected the accusation, saying “We transferred the budget to the Knesset on Aug. 2” and that the request had been awaiting parliamentary approval since early August.
Treasury vs readiness
Al-Jazeera Net framed the dispute as an internal battle in Tel Aviv between Finance Ministry warnings of an “economic collapse” and Israeli army war rooms that “cry out about an empty ‘treasury.’”
The outlet said the dispute threatens “field readiness and social stability at once,” while describing the defense budget as reaching unprecedented levels since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
It reported that Israel’s government approved its 2026 budget at 662 billion shekels, surpassing last year’s budget of 650 billion shekels, and said the defense budget alone neared 184 billion shekels.
A former Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces was quoted saying: “The price of one day of weakness is terrifying, and that is why we must not reach that point again,” linking the warning to the need for additional defense budget allocations.
The article also described how the Apache helicopter deal collapsed, saying the budget department blocked the deal from reaching the political level and that after extensions requested by the Defense and the army, the deal’s validity expired.
What the budget means
The Jerusalem Post said the Knesset will be asked over the coming month, meeting in special recess session, to vote on expansion of the defense budget for urgent IDF weapons procurement from NIS 70 billion to NIS 90b.

It said the expansion would push the annual defense budget to NIS 184b and described Israel’s long-term military buildup plan as having grown by about NIS 50b in just one year.
The Jerusalem Post argued that there is currently no identified full funding source for the defense expenses and said Israel will have to cut the budget of other ministries and impose new taxes.
Al-Jazeera Net added that the internal dispute centers on whether the Israeli economy can bear the level of military spending and whether the army is truly facing a financing crisis that threatens its readiness and ability to rebuild its strength.
It also said the gap widened to 40 billion shekels due to “deep maneuvers in Lebanon” and a “40-day battle against Iran,” while citing a budget of 111 billion shekels allocated by political leadership instead of the 143 billion the army had requested, according to Yedioth Ahronoth.
