Range Rover goes electric

Jaguar Land Rover debuted the 2027 Range Rover Electric as a battery-electric variant that sits alongside internal combustion and plug-in hybrid Range Rovers. Ars Technica said the 2027 Range Rover Electric starts at $138,000 and that JLR told it the company already has 80,000 hand-raisers, with 70 percent from North America and 20 percent of those already owning an EV.

Car and Driver described the electric SUV as powered by a pair of electric motors delivering all-wheel drive traction and 542 horsepower, with a large battery pack beneath the floor that can be recharged quickly via a 350-kW DC fast charging connection. Car and Driver also put a figure on the expected EPA range, estimating 333 miles per charge, while Ars Technica said the front and rear drive units are identical permanent-magnet synchronous motors producing 349 hp (260 kW) each and a combined output of 542 hp (404 kW) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm).

Charging, motors, and control

Motor1 said the Range Rover Electric uses a double-stacked 118.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery made up of 344 prismatic cells and that it uses an 800-volt architecture with split-charging capability. Motor1 added that plugged into a 350-kilowatt public DC fast charger, Range Rover says the battery can go from 10 to 80 percent in around 22 minutes, and that at peak charging speed, 10 minutes can add about 125 miles of range.

Car and Driver described Land Rover’s traction management as an electronic system that monitors for wheel slip and can react in just 50 milliseconds, and it said the SUV includes a height-adjustable air-spring suspension system. Car and Driver also noted the 0–60-MPH time as 4.3 seconds and said the Range Rover Electric can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes when hooked to a 350-kW DC fast charger.

Production, training, and warranty

Motor1 said the Range Rover Electric is built alongside the gas and hybrid models at the company’s Solihull, UK, plant and that JLR retrained 9,000 workers at the plant for electrification, with another 1,500 employees receiving training elsewhere across England’s West Midlands. Motor1 also said battery packs and electric drive units are built at JLR’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, alongside the company’s combustion engines, and that JLR calls it the largest facility of its kind in the UK.

For buyers, Motor1 reported that the battery and electric motors are covered by an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty and that North American buyers get access to Tesla’s Supercharger network thanks to built-in NACS compatibility. In parallel, Ars Technica said JLR told it the 2027 Range Rover Electric is designed to be a Range Rover first and an EV second, and it described the electric version’s lack of tailpipes as the biggest giveaway.
